St. John’s Defeats Hartford in Home Opener, 13-11

Mike Madsen scores five goals in his second-straight contest in St. John’s win over Hartford
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 15, 2020) – After entering the fourth quarter down 11-9, the St. John's men's lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals over the last 15 minutes of play to knock off Hartford, 13-11, and claim its first victory of the season at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday.
The victory on Saturday marks the seventh time the Johnnies have secured a win over the Hawks.
Senior midfielder Mike Madsen led St. John's (1-2) with his second-consecutive five-goal performance. Dylan Willis scored the first three goals of his career while Joe Madsen added two goals of his own to carry the Johnnies to their first win in a home opener since the 2015 season.
Patrick Ednie scored in his second consecutive game as he rifled in St. John's second goal of the game. Jonathan Huber scored in his season debut after missing the first two regular-season contests due to injury. Ryan Schaeffer added his fifth goal of the season late in the contest to inch the Johnnies closer to its first victory of the 2020 campaign.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brody Agres earned the fifth win of his career, stopping eight shots in the winning effort.
Freshman faceoff specialist Jonathan Dugenio registered his third consecutive game with double-digit faceoff wins, claiming 13 of his 26 attempts from the X. Senior Colin Bosak won his first faceoff of the season in his lone attempt against the Hawks.
Hartford (0-2) was led by juniors Christian Paley and Carter O'Connell, each scoring three goals. Five other Hawks tallied goals in the losing effort.
The Red Storm were outshot by Hartford 46-39 in Saturday's win and committed a season-high 24 turnovers despite the victory. St. John's was successful in two of its three man-up opportunities and scooped up a season-high, 40 groundballs.
The Johnnies and the Hawks traded blows in the first quarter, each cashing in on three goals in the opening 15 minutes of the contest. Attackman Christian Haley scored the first two goals for Hartford, only to be answered by two quick goals from Mike Madsen and Ednie to tie the game at two goals apiece. Madsen added his second of the goal of the contest with 4:37 left in the period to give the Johnnies its first lead of the game. Hartford would close the period with Carter O'Connell's first goal of the game, sending both teams into the second frame in a 3-3 deadlock.
The Hawks would open the floodgates in the second period, exploding on a 4-0 scoring run in a 10-minute span. Huber temporarily stopped the bleeding with his first goal of the season at the 5:12 mark in the second quarter. After a Hartford goal scored by Zach Nestor, Willis sprung the momentum back towards the Red Storm, scoring his first and second goals of his career in the closing seconds of the half.

The momentum began to shift in the Red Storm's direction when Joe Madsen scored his second goal of the game to close the third period. In the final quarter, St. John's opened with two quick goals from Mike Madsen to tie the contest at 11-11, with 7:45 left on the clock. Ryan Schaeffer's lone goal of the game couldn't have come at a better time as the senior midfielder gave his team its first lead since the first quarter with just under five minutes remaining. The Johnnies all but clinched its first win of the season with Willis' third goal of the game, taking the ball all the way from his defensive zone to fire a missile passed Hartford goalkeeper Joe Prikhodko.
The Red Storm returns to action next weekend to square off with LIU at Bethpage Stadium in Brookville, N.Y., on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. ET.
