The Red Storm wins its second-straight contest; improve to 6-3 on the year
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2020) – After capping off last weekend's slate of matches with a come-from-behind victory on Sunday at UMass, 5-2, the St. John's women's tennis team claimed its second-consecutive victory with a 4-2 triumph over NJIT at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Red Storm clinched the first point of the afternoon with two doubles wins on the No. 1 and 2 courts. Oceane Garibal and Najah Dawson knocked off NJIT's Advaita Saravanan and Adara Omar in the No. 2 slot, 6-3. St. John's claimed the second doubles triumph on the No. 1 court as Jessica Livianu and Gabriela Tenorio outdueled Joleta Budiman and Amira Badawi, 7-6.
Garibal picked up the Johnnies' first singles victory of the afternoon, bouncing Aya El Sayed in the No. 2 match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
The Highlanders' lone singles triumph of the afternoon narrowed NJIT's deficit to just one as No. 6 Advaita Saravanan defeated Camila Ordonez, 6-0, 6-2.
No. 51 Livianu saw herself trailing in a singles match for the first time this season after dropping the first set, 3-6. Despite losing the first set, the three-time BIG EAST Player of the Year brought the Red Storm within one win of clinching the match, toppling Joleta Budiman in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
NJIT picked up its second singles bout in the No. 4 slot as Dawson fell to Mouna Bouzgarrou in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.
Tenorio claimed the team's fourth and final point of the contest in the No. 5 tilt, bouncing Adara Omar in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
The Red Storm will look to sweep the weekend slate on Sunday as Coach Leo's team squares off with Brown in Providence, R.I., at 3 p.m.
