The Red Storm returns to the Penn Relays and will host the Tom Farrell Classic
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 19, 2020) – Seeking its fourth Metropolitan Outdoor Championship title in the last five years, the St. John's track & field team will face yet another strong schedule in its 2020 campaign.
Head Coach Jim Hurt and the Red Storm will host its seventh annual Tom Farrell Classic on Saturday, May 2 at DaSilva Field in Queens, N.Y. The meet honors St. John's great Tom Farrell, who earned a bronze medal in the 1968 Olympic Games and is one of the most accomplished athletes in school history. The Johnnies will look to have another strong showing in their lone home meet of the outdoor season after capturing six first-place finishes last year.
Ahead of its only home meet, St. John's will kick off its outdoor schedule at the Penn Invite on Saturday, March 21 at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field. The Red Storm will travel to North Carolina the following weekend for the Raleigh Relays on March 27-28 at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility. The Raleigh Relays is one of the largest outdoor track meets on the East Coast, an event that featured Penn State, North Carolina, Michigan State and Duke as participating schools last season.
The Johnnies will look to capture their third straight Metropolitan Outdoor Championship when the team travels to Piscataway, N.J., on April 10-11. St. John's took the Metropolitan title last season as Leah Anderson grabbed two first-place finishes in the 200 and 400-meter dashes while Amarys Berry took the top spot in the shot put.
On April 17-18, St. John's will have athletes participating in both the Stony Brook Invitational as well as the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. The Johnnies will then participate in the 126th running of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., on April 25 before traveling to the Yale Invitational in New Haven, Conn., on Sunday, April 26.
After hosting the Tom Farrell Classic on May 2, the Red Storm begins its championship slate in Villanova, Pa., for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships on May 8-9. St. John's will look to improve on its third-place finish in last year's meet where Anderson was named the BIG EAST Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer. The Johnnies' sprinter earned the accolade after picking up three gold medals in the 200 meters, 400 meters and 4x400-meter relay. Berry will also enter the championship meet as the reigning conference champion in the shot put.
St. John's later heads to the ECAC Championships on May 16-17 in Princeton, N.J.
The NCAA East Regional Championships will be held in Lexington, Ky., on May 28-30. Anderson was the only Johnnie to participate in the NCAA East Regional in 2019, finishing 28th overall in the 400 meters and 42nd overall in the 200-meter dash.
Two weeks later, the top performers from the preliminary rounds will advance to Austin, Texas, for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships. The four-day meet will be held on June 10-13 at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium.
St. John's returns to action on March 1 when the team travels to Geneva, Ohio, for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships at the SPIRE Institute.
