Livianu secures her 10th singles win of the season in Sunday’s loss to the Bears
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Feb. 23, 2020) – After capturing victories in its last two matches against UMass and NJIT, the St. John's women's tennis team dropped its fourth contest of the season on Sunday to Brown, 5-2, at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Red Storm (6-4) clinched the first point of the afternoon with two doubles wins on the No. 1 and 3 courts. Milka Genkova and Kajsa Stegrell knocked off Brown's Gabriella Dellacono and Devon Jack in the No. 3 slot, 6-1. St. John's claimed the second doubles triumph in the No. 1 tilt as Jessica Livianu and Gabriela Tenorio topped Julia Newman and Ryan Peus, 6-3.
In singles play, The Johnnies lost the first two bouts and quickly fell behind to the Bears, 2-1. Genkova dropped her singles tilt in the No. 3 slot, falling to Britany Lau in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Najah Dawson was forced to retire her match against Julia Newman on the No. 4 court due to an injury she suffered late in the first set.
No. 51 Livianu evened the contest at two points apiece, bouncing Courtney Kowalsky for her 10th singles win of the year, 6-2, 6-1.
The Johnnies faltered down the stretch as Brown secured the next three matches to clinch a 5-2 win on the road. The Bears would capture all three of their singles victories in straight sets in the No. 2, 5, and 6 slots as St. John's Oceane Garibal, Tenorio, and Camila Ordonez, lost to Devon Jack (6-4, 6-3), Ryan Peus (6-3, 6-1), and Gabriella Dellacono (6-1, 7-6), respectively.
The Red Storm will square off with Columbia on Friday, Feb. 28, at 11:30 a.m. The Johnnies will wrap up the weekend on Sunday, Mar. 1, with the first of two contests in South Carolina when they face Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., at noon.
