St. John’s will look to complete season sweep of the Bulldogs in Queens on Friday
The St. John's women's basketball team will continue its three-game homestand on Friday evening when it welcomes Butler to Carnesecca Arena for a 7 p.m. meeting.
The contest between the Johnnies (16-11, 9-7 BIG EAST) and the Bulldogs (19-8, 11-5 BIG EAST) will be available to live stream on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Sky Lindsay and Jon Yardley on the call from Queens.
St. John's will look to improve to 10-3 at home this year, as the Johnnies are enjoying their most successful season in Queens since the 2015-16 campaign. That year, the Johnnies went 11-3 at home before going on to win the conference crown for the first time since 1988.
In the Johnnies' most recent outing against Seton Hall on Saturday, freshman guard Leilani Correa put forth her third 30-ball effort of the year to earn BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season on Monday. The Manchester, N.J., native poured in a team-high 32 points on 14-of-23 shooting from floor, with 19 of those points coming in the third quarter alone. Correa's 32 points were five off the BIG EAST single-game rookie record of 37, set by Providence's Kerri Chatten in 1995. Correa is one of just two BIG EAST players with three 30-point games this season. With a trio of 30-point performances this season, Correa becomes just the second player in program history to do so and the first since Tawana Jackson, who reached 30 points four times in 1995.
Tiana England snapped out of an offensive funk on Saturday against Seton Hall, recording her first double-digit effort in four games. The redshirt junior went off for 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor while tying a season-high 10 assists en route to the Red Storm's victory over the Pirates. Arguably one of the top point guards in the BIG EAST, England ranks third in the conference in assists with 5.4 dimes per game, including 5.6 during league action. England has dished out 145 helpers this season to rank 17th in the nation. Over her Red Storm career, England has recorded a combined 492 dimes, just eight shy of 500. If the Stamford, Conn., native reaches the 500 mark against the Bulldogs on Friday, she will become just the sixth Johnnie in program history to eclipse that milestone, and the first to do it in under three seasons.
Butler enters Friday's matchup with St. John's on the heels of a 2-0 weekend, with wins over Creighton and Providence. The Bulldogs boast a 19-8 record with an 11-5 mark in conference action to sit third overall in the league standings. Kristen Spolyar leads the Bulldogs and ranks third in the BIG EAST with an 18.5 scoring average. The Bulldogs have been dangerous defensively this year, ranking ninth in the NCAA in steals per game (11.3). Freshman guard Oumou Toure leads the BIG EAST in swipes with 2.5 per game.
The Johnnies lead the series between the two programs, boasting an overall record of 9-4. In the two team's first meeting of the regular season, St. John's downed Butler, 67-42, at the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. Qadashah Hoppie recorded 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor to lead the squad in scoring. For Butler, Spolyar paced the way for the Bulldogs with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Following Friday's contest with Butler, the Johnnies will wrap up regular season play on Sunday, welcoming Xavier to Carnesecca Arena for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Musketeers. That contest will be part of a single admission doubleheader with the men's basketball team, who will face off against No. 10/11 Creighton at noon.
