St. John’s Falls at Michigan, 16-11

An 11-goal first half propels Michigan over the Red Storm
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Feb. 29, 2020) – After winning two-straight contests against Hartford and LIU, the St. John's lacrosse team lost its third game of the season to Michigan, 16-11, on a frigid Saturday afternoon at Michigan Lacrosse Stadium.
Senior Joe Madsen led the Johnnies (2-3) with three goals and four assists, marking the fourth consecutive game a Red Storm player has finished with five or more points. Matt Oehl finished with four points, registering his first-career hat trick and dishing an assist.
Jonathan Huber (two goals) and Mike Madsen (one goal, one assist) both recorded two points while Dylan Willis and Ryan Schaeffer scored their fifth and ninth tallies of the season, respectively, in the losing effort.
Redshirt junior Brian Quick made his first appearance of the season as starting goalkeeper Brody Agres went down with an injury late in the second period. Both netminders combined for 11 saves.
Freshman faceoff specialist Jonathan Dugenio registered his fifth-straight game with double-digit faceoff wins, claiming 17 of his 30 attempts from the X. Senior Colin Bosak lost his lone attempt against the Wolverines.
Michigan (3-2) was led by Bryce Clay who finished with four goals. Freshman Josh Zawada scored three goals and provided three assists in Michigan's X victory at home. Kevin Mack and Rocco Sutherland also finished with three goals. The two Wolverine goalkeepers, Jack Kiracofe and Matt Trowbirdge, collectively saved nine shots in the winning effort.
Michigan outshot the Red Storm 45-35 and caused 10 St. John's turnovers. The Johnnies finished the game 1-for-2 in extra man opportunities and won the groundball battle, scooping up 35 compared to the Wolverines' 31 groundballs.
The Wolverines jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to start the contest behind goals from Kevin Mack (twice) and Josh Zawada. Oehl put the Red Storm on the board with his third goal of the 2020 campaign at the 7:50 mark. Michigan responded with two additional goals in less than a minute to take a commanding 5-1 advantage. Oehl closed the opening frame with his second goal of the contest off an assist from Mike Madsen.
Leading 5-2 at the start of the second quarter, Michigan picked up where it had left off, scoring the first three goals of the period (Clay, Zawada, Alex Buckanavage) to increase its lead to 8-2. Huber temporarily stopped the bleeding with the Johnnies' first goal of the second quarter at the 8:04 mark. The Wolverines would not let St. John's cut back into their lead as they would score three of the last four goals to take an 11-4 lead into the break.
St. John's and Michigan each traded goals over the first eight minutes of the third period. With Michigan holding a 14-6 lead at the 7:51 mark, four different Johnnies (Huber, Willis, Mike Madsen, Joe Madsen) added tallies four a 4-1 scoring run before the end of the period.
The Wolverines held a 15-10 lead for the first eight and a half minutes of the final period, limiting St. John's ability to mount a late comeback. Michigan's Josh Zawada scored his third goal of the contest to give the Wolverines a six-goal, 16-10 lead with 8:35 remaining. Oehl secured his first-career hat trick with 3:12 left in the fourth quarter.
The Red Storm returns to action next Saturday at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday, March 7, to host Siena at 1 p.m.
