The Johnnies and Bluejays will meet on FS2 Saturday at 9:30 p.m. ET
Riding a three-game winning streak, the St. John's women's basketball team will look to keep its momentum going when the Johnnies invade The Windy City this weekend for the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament at Wintrust Arena.
The no. 3 seed in the tournament after finishing the regular season with a 11-7 record in league action, the Johnnies will take on sixth-seeded Creighton in Saturday's quarterfinal round at 9:30 p.m. ET.
The game will be broadcast live FS2 with Kim Adams, John Fanta and sideline reporter Meghan Caffrey on the call from Chicago.
The Johnnies are one of six teams to receive a bye to the quarterfinals, marking the 28th time in program history they have reached at least that round.
St. John's has also made 10 trips to the conference semifinals and has played in the conference title game on five different occasions. Four of those five championship game appearances resulted in league titles with the most recent coming in 2016 by way of a victory over the Bluejays.
The St. John's women's basketball program has seen success during the BIG EAST Tournament as the no. 3 seed, boasting a perfect 6-0 record. The Johnnies entered the tournament as the no. 3 seed in 1984 and again in 1988, capturing the conference crown both of those years.
The Red Storm looks to begin its 2020 postseason run with a solid mixture of youth and experience, including a pair of players that earned recognition from the BIG EAST at the conclusion of the regular season. Leilani Correa received the league's Sixth-Woman Award and was unanimously selected to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team while Qadashah Hoppie was tabbed to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Correa is the first Johnnie in program history to be named the conference's top reserve, averaging 12.2 points per game for the Red Storm. Hoppie, who leads St. John's in scoring, is averaging 16.0 points per game on a 39.3 percent shooting from the floor, including a 39.6 shooting clip from distance.
During the regular season, the Johnnies were an offensive force, averaging 72.9 points per game for the team's best scoring output since the 1994-95 campaign when the Red Storm averaged 73.1 points per game. St. John's offensive production is up nearly eight points per game since the end of the 2018-19 season and the Red Storm sits second in the BIG EAST for scoring offense. St. John's is shooting the rock at an efficient clip, leading the BIG EAST in three-point field goal percentage at 35.5 percent mark while sitting second in field goal percentage at 43.4 percent.
Saturday's contest will mark the 21st all-time meeting between St. John's and Creighton with the Red Storm holding an 11-9 advantage after capturing the season sweep of the Bluejays during conference play. The Johnnies also boast a 4-1 record against Creighton in postseason play, including the aforementioned win over Creighton in the 2016 BIG EAST Championship game. Prior to the realignment of the BIG EAST, the Johnnies defeated the Bluejays, 69-67, in the first round of the NCAA tournament in 2012.
In their last postseason conference matchup, the Bluejays held off the Johnnies, 66-58, in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 tournament.
Creighton enters Saturday's contest riding a three-game winning streak, defeating Xavier, Villanova and Georgetown to close out the regular season. In Sunday's win over the Hoyas, BIG EAST Player of the Year Jaylyn Agnew broke the program's and the conference's single-game scoring record with 43 points.
Agnew leads the way for Creighton and currently ranks inside the top 10 nationally with 20.8 points per game. Her 94.9 percent accuracy from the charity stripe leads the NCAA. Through 14 conference games, Agnew averaged 23.1 points per contest while adding 6.4 rebounds per game.
Temi Carda is the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 13.1 points per game while Olivia Elger and Tatum Rembao are each recording 10.2 points per contest.
At the close of the regular season, Creighton ranked among the top teams in the nation for the fewest turnovers, giving the ball up just 11.2 times per game. The Bluejays' 271 made three-pointers are second-most in the conference and place them inside the top-10 in the country.
The winner of Saturday's quarterfinal round will return to action on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. ET and will take on either Marquette, Villanova or Xavier in the semis.
