QUEENS, N.Y. (May 18, 2020) – St. John's track & field assistant coach Aliann Pompey was named to the Times Union's list of the greatest athletes to come out of the Capital Region area.
Pompey is one of four track & field athletes to receive the honor.
"Most of my Olympic dreams and other aspirations started when I was in high school," said Pompey. "I remember the three other athletes and all they've done. I also competed with a good number of the honorable mentions listed. I admired them and was more significantly inspired by them."
In 1995, Pompey captured an outdoor state title in the 400 meters while attending Cohoes High School in Albany, N.Y.
Pompey continued her career at Manhattan College where she became the first female national champion in program history after securing the 400-meter crown at the 2000 NCAA Division I National Championships. Pompey also secured seven school records as a Jasper.
Pompey represented her native Guyana at the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics in addition to participating in the World Championships in Athletics five times and the IAAF World Indoor Championships on four occasions.
In 2009, Pompey was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletics Hall of Fame. She later became one of 18 athletes selected to the Capital Region Track Hall of Fame's inaugural class in 2018.
