Schumacher Wins Silver at the October North American Cup

Three current and former Red Storm fencers post top-five finishes in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS (Nov. 1, 2021)- The St. John's fencing team opened its season at the October North American Cup in St. Louis, Mo. The four-day competition was highlighted by 2017 national champion Cooper Schumacher's second-place finish in Division I men's epee.
The October edition of the North American Cup featured top amateur and professional fencers from around the world.
Schumacher entered elimination play as the 40th seed, yet the former All-American persevered through tight matches to reach the final. Schumacher ultimately fell on Monday evening to Henry Lange in tight contest, 15-13.
Elsewhere in the men's epee tournament, St. John's great and 2020 Olympian Curtis McDowald lost to Schumacher in the quarterfinals to finish in fifth. Former Red Storm fencers Sean White and Adam Rodney put on a strong showing. Both White and Rodney finished in the top-20 overall. Ivan Zagoruiko finished in 25th place.
Fares Ferjani dominated in his four elimination wins on the way to semifinals, before falling to James Linder to finish in a tie for third place. Ferjani continued a strong stretch of competition in 2021 that includes a top-25 individual finish at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Former St. John's fencers Dalton Walker and Tariq Karam also competed in men's saber, finishing tied for 82ndand tied for 96th, respectively.
Graduate student Andrea Rizzi led the way for the Red Storm on the women's side. Rizzi battled her way to the quarterfinal round and earned a fifth-place finish in Women's Epee. Freshman Epee specialist Kincso Kollar impressed in her collegiate debut with a 24th place finish. Nikole Gavirelko finished right behind Kollar in 25th place to round out a strong competition in women's epee for the Johnnies.
Arianna Pappone kicked off her senior season with a top-50 finish in Division I women's foil. On the men's foil side, Jan Jurkiewicz put up a strong showing at the Cervantes Convention Center. The native of Poland advanced to the quarterfinal round before losing a tight battle to Marsel Nagimov, 15-11. Olympian and former St. John's fencer Eli Schenkel finished in 40th place while current Johnnie, Cesar Colon, finished in 75th place.
Fanni Potz-Nagy was the lone competitor for the Johnnies in Division I women's saber. Potz-Nagy won her first three matches before falling to Atara Greenbaum in the Round of 32.
St. John's will return to action on Dec. 5 when it travels to Waltham, Mass., to take part in the Brandeis Invitational.
