Former UConn standout to join the Red Storm for 2022 campaign
QUEENS, N.Y. – Melina Couzis, a former star midfielder and defender at UConn, has committed to play for Head Coach Ian Stone and the Red Storm women's soccer program as a graduate student in the fall of 2022.
"We are really happy to welcome Melina to St. John's Women's Soccer," said Head Coach Ian Stone. "She is a proven BIG EAST standout who will bring great experience and ability to our team."
Couzis last suited up for the Huskies in the spring of 2021, earning First Team All-BIG EAST and Second Team United Soccer Coaches All-Region honors after leading UConn to an 8-3-1 record and second-place finish in the conference's East Division. The Baldwin Place, N.Y., native played and started in all 12 games and played a team-high 1,124 minutes for the Huskies. Couzis, who anchored a UConn backline that allowed just 0.58 goals per game, also added a goal against Butler and in the BIG EAST semifinals and dished out an assist during the regular season against St. John's.
As a junior in 2019, Couzis started 11 of her 17 appearances, tallying a goal and two assists in the process. That effort came after a 2018 campaign in which Couzis earned a start in all 18 of the Huskies' matches and registered a pair of assists.
Couzis made an immediate impact for the Huskies as a freshman in 2017, starting five of her 14 appearances, including a full 90-minute effort against Memphis in the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
After graduating from Connecticut in May of 2021 with a bachelors' degree in kinesiology and exercise science, Couzis began graduate study in translational medicine at The City College of New York.
Prior to college, Couzis played four years of varsity soccer at Somers High School, tallying 60 goals and 63 assists for her career and earning All-American honors as a senior in 2016.
