Mike Madsen scored 89 seconds into the extra frame
In a back-and-forth affair that featured different 13 ties, Mike Madsen broke the final deadlock 89 seconds into the overtime period, lifting St. John's to a 19-18 victory over Hofstra in the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.
"I'm really proud of our guys," said Head Coach Jason Miller. "I thought they were pretty gritty today. I don't think we got too many stops defensively in the fourth quarter, but we got one when we needed it, and ended up with a really good possession in OT. We got the ball to Mike in a really good spot and he did what Mike does."
St. John's led 14-11 late in the third quarter before Hofstra rattled off three straight goals to knot the score at 14. From there, the Red Storm and Pride were also tied at 15, 16, 17 and 18 before Madsen's overtime game winner.
Madsen's game-winner was his second of the day, as the graduate student from Locust Valley finished the afternoon with a pair of goal and three assists. His twin brother Joe also finished with five points, scoring a team-high four goals and assisting on another.
Three other Johnnies finished the day with hat tricks, as the Red Storm recorded its highest single-game total since scoring 20 against Rutgers on March 16, 2013. Redshirt junior Jonathan Huber and junior Dylan Willis each logged three goals and an assist while graduate student Ryan Schaeffer found the back of the net three times, including a marker with 32 seconds left to give St. John's an 18-17 lead.
Thomas Martello and Matt Duncan registered a goal and an assist for St. John's. Patrick Ednie and Ricardo Carreras added single goals for the Red Storm while Mackenzie Iacocca and Connor Kalmus chipped in assists.
With the victory, St. John's won its season opener for the first time since 2014. The Red Storm also improved to 2-2 in its last four games against local rival Hofstra.
Graduate student Ryan Tierney registered eight goals and three assists to lead the Pride.
Huber got the scoring started early for St. John's, finding the back of the net just 20 seconds into the action and putting the Red Storm ahead 1-0. A few minutes, Hofstra scored twice in the span of 12 seconds to log the first of several lead changes on the day. Mike Madsen, who assisted on Huber's first goal, knotted the score at two before Hofstra's Alex Concannon and Schaeffer traded goals to make it a 3-3 game after one quarter.
Careras and Joe Madsen provided some quick offense for the Johnnies early in the second period, as Carreras scored off the opening faceoff before Madsen put the Red Storm ahead 5-3 just 1:11 into the quarter. Hofstra responded with three unanswered goals in less than three minutes, reclaiming a 6-5 edge on Tierney's third marker of the afternoon. Schaeffer pulled the Red Storm even at six at the 9:47 mark of the second before both teams went scoreless for more than seven minutes. Tierney found the back of the net with just over two minutes to go in the half before Duncan scored with 20 seconds left to make it a 7-7 game at the intermission.
With the Red Storm trailing 9-8 following a Riley Forte goal with 11:55 to go in the third, St. John's held Hofstra scoreless for the next seven-plus minutes and rattled off a five-goal run, taking a 13-9 lead on an Ednie goal with 5:19 remaining. Ednie was one of five different Johnnies to find the back of the net during this span, as Joe Madsen, Martello, Huber and Willis also scored for St. John's.
Hofstra responded by scoring five of the game's next six goals to knot the score at 14 apiece with 11:25 to go in the fourth quarter. Just 10 seconds later, Willis kicked off the final period scoring for St. John's to give the Red Storm a 15-14 edge. Less than a minute later, Tierney scored for Hofstra to tie the game at 15 before both teams went more than four minutes without a goal.
With 6:06 remaining, Forte gave Hofstra its first lead since 9-8, finding the back of the net to make it a 16-15 Pride advantage. Less than two minutes later, Mike Madsen found Huber in front for the equalizer before Joe Madsen put the Johnnies back on top, 17-16, with 2:38 remaining.
After Tierney pulled the Pride even with just under two minutes to play, Schaeffer scored with 32 ticks left on the clock to give the Red Storm what looked like it would be a decisive 18-17 edge. Tierney, however, had different ideas, as his eighth marker of the afternoon just 16 seconds later sent the game into overtime.
Hofstra came away with the first possession in the four-minute overtime period, but the Red Storm defense got the stop it needed, as Benjamin Bishop caused a turnover that was scooped up by Pat Smyth. Following a successful clear and a Red Storm timeout, Martello found Mike Madsen in front for the game winner.
The Red Storm, which wraps non-conference play with a 1-0 record, opens BIG EAST action on Feb. 20 against Providence. Opening face-off set for 12 p.m. at DaSilva Field.
