The Red Storm drops its first home contest of 2021
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2021) – After winning its season opener last week at Hofstra, the St. John's Lacrosse team lost its home opener to Providence on Sunday afternoon, 16-8, at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Graduate student Ryan Schaeffer tallied a hat trick for the second time in as many tries this season.
A member of this week's BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll and United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division I Team of the Week, Mike Madsen also collected a hat trick in the losing effort.
Dylan Willis and Thomas Martello each tacked on a goal to round out the Red Storm's scoring.
Providence was led by Ryan Nawrocki, who scored two goals and dished out four assists for a team-high six points. Matt Leader, Dan Axelson, Ryan Zimmerman and Tim Hinrichs also had three goals apiece for the Friars Sunday afternoon.
Providence outshot the Red Storm, 59-26, and caused 10 of St. John's turnovers. The Johnnies finished the game 1-for-2 in extra man opportunities and made 12 successful clears.
The Friars jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first quarter, as the Johnnies were not able to find the back of the net during the opening period.
After Providence tacked on another goal early in the second quarter, Schaeffer opened up the Red Storm scoring with an unassisted goal before Mike Madsen cut to the middle of the field, dodged a defender and fired a shot past the Friars goalie to cut the Providence lead in half, 4-2.
Beginning a minute and a half later, the Friars scored three in the span of a minute to push its lead to five. Willis temporarily stopped the bleeding with his fourth goal of the season off an assist from Joe Madsen, but Providence closed out the half with a three-goal scoring streak to take a 10-3 lead at the intermission.
St. John's and Providence traded man-up goals to start the third quarter before Providence extended its lead to eight, 12-4, heading into the final period. The Red Storm and the Friars scored four goals apiece in the fourth quarter. Mike Madsen scored two of his three goals in the frame.
The Red Storm will travel down to the nation's capital on Feb. 27 and compete against Georgetown. Opening face-off set for 12 p.m. at Cooper Field.
