QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 19, 2021) – The St. John's 4x400-meter relay team travels to Blacksburg, Va., this weekend for the Virginia Tech Challenge at Rector Field House.
Senior sprinter Leah Anderson will participate in the 400 meters on Saturday at 2 p.m. before joining teammates Avon Samuels, Skyy Diop and Brianna Burkley in the 4x400-meter race slated for 3:25 p.m.
VCU and Pittsburgh will also take part in the 4x400-meter relay.
"Leah is coming off a personal record in the 500 meters, and the ladies have looked great in practice," said Associate Head Coach Aliann Pompey. "It's been almost a full year since our last competition and we've been getting the rust out in practice, so I think we'll do really well this weekend. We're going into the meet with the objective of qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The young ladies are fully on board with that mission, and I can't wait to see what happens."
Last season, the Red Storm's 4x400m squad was crowned the indoor BIG EAST Champions after registering a time of 3:40.45. The Johnnies set their best mark of the season at the 2020 ECAC/IC4A Indoor Championships, clocking in at 3:37.72. The time was just 0.16 seconds shy of breaking the program record of 3:37.56 that was set in 1998.
The team of Anderson, Samuels, Diop and Burkley went undefeated in the indoor 4x400-meter relay last year.
Anderson was named the BIG EAST Women's Most Outstanding Performer in track events and the Women's High Point Performer of the meet at the 2020 conference indoor championships. She took home two gold medals in the 200 and 400-meter dashes with marks of 23.63 and 53.76.
Anderson broke the program record for the indoor 400 meters at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational last season, recording a personal best time of 53.25.
