St. John’s Men’s Tennis Sweeps Sacred Heart in Season Opener

The Johnnies win their first match in 361 days
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team picked up its first victory in its season opener on Wednesday, sweeping Sacred Heart, 7-0, at Cunningham Park in Queens.
This marked the third time in the last four years that the Johnnies have defeated the Pioneers with all three victories coming in straight sets. Coach Dillon Pottish's squad has also won six consecutive matches dating back to last season.
The Johnnies led off doubles play with the pairing of Ignacio Garcia and Charlie James, as they were able to grab a 6-3 victory. Next up were Dylan Loru and Louis-nils Michel, who were able to take their matchup, 6-4. Evan Felcher and Djuro Opacic closed out doubles play in the No. 3 slot, taking a decisive 6-1 victory to help the Johnnies pick up a point in doubles play.
Garcia led off the afternoon for the Red Storm in singles play, defeating William Wibmer in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1. Dating back to last season, the Red Storm senior is a perfect 10-0 when going in the No. 1-3 slots. Opacic followed up Garcia by taking his contest over Cameron Goldstein in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-0, to give the Johnnies a 2-0 edge in singles play, and put them up 3-0 overall.
Next up in the No. 3 slot for the Red Storm was Louis-nils Michel, who took down Lefteri Apostolou, 6-1, in each of their two sets, respectively. He was followed by Charlie James, who picked up where he left off last season in the spring where he went 6-1, defeating Ayman Khan, 6-1 and 6-2, in the No. 4 slot.
The final two matches of the afternoon were won by junior Evan Felcher, who defeated Lucca Casalduc, 6-0 and 6-1, followed by senior Dylan Loru, who defeated Matthew Nagel, 7-6 and 6-2, to seal the 7-0 victory for the Johnnies. It marked the first victory of Felcher's career as a member of the Red Storm, as he went 0-1 a year ago.
The Johnnies have nearly two weeks off before their next match with Drexel, which will take place on March 6 down in Philadelphia.
