Garziano records first-career hat trick against the Pioneers
Sophomore midfielder Jessica Garziano recorded the first hat trick of her collegiate career on Thursday, powering St. John's to a 3-0 win over Sacred Heart.
Three days after finding a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, Garziano becomes the second active player to record a career hat trick for the Red Storm, joining teammate Zsani Kajan.
Alex Madden picked up her second point of the season, assisting on Garziano's first goal.
Ava Collins, who was name BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday, logged her third assist of the year on the Johnnies' second goal of the match.
Between the pipes, Naya Lipkens registered her first clean sheet of the 2021 campaign, making two saves en route to her second win in as many games.
St. John's defenders held the Pioneers to just five shots on the afternoon, allowing only two looks on goal. The Red Storm's backline has held its last two opponents to a combined five chances on net.
After seeing two shots sail wide in the first 17 minutes of the match, Garziano finally broke through for St. John's in the 29th minute. On the ensuing set piece, Madden sent a corner kick to the inside of the six-yard box for Garziano, who tapped it home for St. John's. Garziano's first-half goal gave the Johnnies an early advantage that they would not relinquish.
Coming out of the intermission, Garziano struck again in the 66th minute. Collins send a long pass over the head of a Sacred Heart defender to Garziano, who fired it home for her second goal of the afternoon.
Three minutes later, Nicole Gordon drew a foul from just outside the box for the Red Storm. As a result, Garziano took the free kick from 18-yards out. The sophomore rocketed a high shot past the Pioneers' goalkeeper to secure the hat trick and the victory for St. John's.
The Red Storm will return to action at Belson Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. when it plays host to the University of Massachusetts
