The St. John's women's soccer team will continue its five-game homestand on Sunday, when the Johnnies welcome the University of Massachusetts to Belson Stadium.
Sunday's contest against UMass is slated to begin at 3 p.m. and will be an audio broadcast on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm, who is off to a 2-0-0 start, enters Sunday's contest on the heels of a 3-0 victory over Sacred Heart on Thursday.
Sophomore midfielder Jessica Garziano anchored the Red Storm past the Pioneers, recording the first hat trick of her collegiate career. After finishing second on the team in points a season ago with five, Garziano has already increased her point total by four through just two games this year. The Melville, N.Y., native leads the squad with four goals and nine points over the first two matches of the season.
In the Red Storm's win over the Pioneers, Alex Madden and reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Ava Collins both tallied an assist for St. John's. Collins currently sits second on the squad in points with five after recording a goal and two assists in the team's home opener against UAlbany on Feb. 21.
Naya Lipkens picked up her first clean sheet of the season against Sacred Heart, making two saves en route to her second win in as many games. The Red Storm's backline has held its last two opponents to just five chances on net.
Sunday will mark the first game of the season for UMass, who returns to the pitch for the first time in 478 days. The Minutewomen, who were picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10, welcome back their top goal scorer from a season ago in Lauren Bonavita. The Hanson, Mass., native tallied 12 goals over the 2019 campaign to earn spot on the All-Conference First Team.
Sunday will mark the third all-time meeting between Massachusetts and St. John's, with the Red Storm holding a 1-0-1 edge. The two programs last played each other during the 2013 season. In that game, the Johnnies' all-time leading scorer Rachel Daly converted on a late-game penalty kick to lift St. John's to a 1-0 victory over Massachusetts at Rudd Field.
Following Sunday's matchup with UMass, the Red Storm will kick off BIG EAST play with Villanova on March 4 at Belson Stadium.
