After a delayed start the Red Storm will begin their fencing season
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 5, 2021) – The Red Storm fencing program will begin the hunt for its second national championship on Saturday morning when it hosts Boston College beginning at 9:30 a.m. inside Taffner Fieldhouse.
Saturday morning will be the first time the Johnnies are back in action since Head Coach Yury Gelman led his squad to the NCAA Northeast Regionals last March.
Just before the fencing season was abruptly cut short last year, 10 Johnnies earned bids at the 2020 NCAA Fencing Championships, where the maximum amount of fencers that a school can receive is 12. The men's team will be returning all five of their fencers who qualified, as for the women's team they will be returning three of the five who qualified.
Epee specialist Ivan Zagoruiko, a gold medalist at the 2019 Northeast Regionals, will be returning as a graduate student.
The fearsome duo in men's foil of Jan Jurkiewicz and Maxime Tarasiewicz finished in fifth and sixth place at the NCAA Northeast Regionals and secured a bid to the championship for the first time in both their collegiate careers.
On the women's side, junior foil fencer Arianna Pappone will look to follow in the footsteps of Katarzyna Lachman, last year's regional gold medalist. Pappone finished off her sophomore campaign strong by securing 14 victories at the Temple Fencing Invitational before capturing bronze at the NCAA Regional Championship.
In women's epee, Andrea Rizzi finished another stellar season with 10 wins at both the St. John's and Temple Invitational before claiming silver for the second year in row at the Northeast Regionals. Last season as a freshman, Nicole Gavrilko earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship by winning bronze at Regionals.
Despite there not being a NCAA Championship, 11 Johnnies were recognized as USFCA Awards All-Americans based off their work through the season and NCAA Regionals.
The Eagles had three members from their squad earn a spot at the NCAA Fencing Championship last year. Of the three, two will be returning this season. Bin Huang finished in fifth-place finish in foil at the ACC Championship and came in 14th at the NCAA Regionals. In men's saber, Spencer Kuldell finished his sophomore year by coming in the 10th place at the NCAA Regionals.
Following tomorrow's match, the Johnnies will travel to Madison, N.J. on Sunday, Feb. 14 to face off against Drew University.
