The Johnnies and Hoyas will kick off a 1 p.m.
After suffering its first loss of the season at the hands of Connecticut on Thursday afternoon, the St. John's women's soccer team will wrap up its two-game road swing on Sunday, traveling to our nation's capital for a 1 p.m. meeting with No. 16/25 Georgetown.
The contest between the Johnnies and the Hoyas will be broadcast live on GUHoyas ($).
The Red Storm's (5-1, 2-1 BIG EAST) Sunday loss to UConn snapped a five-game winning streak to start the season, marking St. John's best start since the 2013 campaign. That year, the Johnnies went 6-0 before reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
Despite being shutout for the first time this season against the Huskies, the Red Storm still enters Sunday's contest with one of the BIG EAST's best offenses. The Johnnies' 13 goals through six games are tied with Georgetown for the second most in the conference. Last season, St. John's scored just three times in its first six games and only 17 times all season. Through games played on Thursday, the Red Storm is averaging 6.0 points per contest to rank second in the league.
For her efforts in the team's most recent wins over Villanova and Seton Hall, Zsani Kajan was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. The redshirt senior had a hand in both game winners for St. John's last week. Kajan notched an assist on Frederique St.-Jean's golden goal to help lift St. John's to a 1-0 overtime victory against Villanova, before netting a golden goal of her own in the 96th minute to down Seton Hall, 2-1. The game-winning goal was the ninth of Kajan's Red Storm career.
Sunday will mark the 22nd all-time meeting between St. John's and Georgetown, with the Hoyas holding a 12-6-3 advantage. The Red Storm will look to defeat Georgetown for the first time since 2014.
The nationally ranked Hoyas enter Sunday's contest with an overall record of 5-0 and a 3-0 mark in conference action.
In Georgetown's most recent win over Villanova, sophomore Gia Vicari scored her fifth goal of the season, while graduate student Daisy Cleverley scored her first goal to help Georgetown to a 2-0 shutout victory. With the clean sheet against the Wildcats, Georgetown has not allowed its opposition to score yet this season.
Vicari leads Georgetown in scoring this year with five tallies. She is one of six Hoyas to find the back of the net this season. Sofie Fox, Julia Leas and Grace Nguyen have all recorded two goals each, while Daisy Cleverley and Jenna Menta have each chipped in one. Menta also leads the team in assists with four on the season.
Goalkeepers Lauren Gallagher and Alyssa Navarrete have split time between the pipes this year for Georgetown, recording a combined nine saves. The duo leads the league with a perfect goals against average.
