Red Storm looks for first BIG EAST wins of 2021
South Orange, N.J. (March 19, 2021) – The St. John's softball team travels to South Orange, N.J. this weekend to take on Seton Hall in its first road BIG EAST series of 2021 at the Essex County Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field.
The two BIG EAST foes will play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch at noon while Sunday's single game will also begin at 12 p.m. All three contests will be streamed on the Pirates Sports Network via SHUPirates.com. Live stats will also be available.
The Red Storm (3-6, 0-3 BIG EAST) is yet to play a game outside of New York this season, as both road contests came in the Bronx at Fordham last Wednesday. The Pirates (4-8, 1-2 BIG EAST) are 4-2 at home this season but fell in two of their three conference matchups with Butler in New Jersey last weekend.
The Johnnies are coming off a midweek loss to Hofstra, 11-10, in a slugfest that featured 21 combined runs on 24 hits. St. John's led, 9-6, after five innings of play but surrendered five runs over the final two innings to take the loss. Gretchen Bowie and Gabriella Conca led the way for the Red Storm with two hits while Marissa Rizzi tacked on three RBIs to continue her torrid start to the 2021 campaign. Bowie's third inning triple, which knocked in a run, set a new program record for career triples with 12.
St. John's offense has gotten off to a strong start in 2021, as the team entered the week ranked second in the BIG EAST in batting average, slugging percentage and on base percentage. Rizzi and Peyton Cody have led the way for the Johnnies, as the Red Storm first baseman heads into the weekend batting .500 with three home runs and 10 RBIs while Cody is hitting .394 with three homers and a team-high 12 RBIs as well.
In addition to Cody and Rizzi, Conca has come on strong of late, as she hit safely in each of last weekend's games with DePaul and on Wednesday against Hofstra. The Red Storm senior right fielder is 5-10 over her last four games while adding two walks and five runs scored.
Looking at the Red Storm's opponent for the weekend, Seton Hall began the season back on Feb. 26 down at the Gamecock Invitational where it lost all five games to some stiff competition, including No. 14 Duke and No. 24 South Carolina. The Pirates have rebounded since, winning four of their last seven games upon returning to the northeast. The Pirates comes into the weekend having lost three of their last four, however, as they dropped two of three games to Butler last weekend and were blanked by Fordham, 6-0, on Wednesday. Seton Hall is led by Darby Pandolfo, who is hitting .452 on the season with two home runs and five doubles.
Seton Hall is the second-most commonly played opponent in St. John's softball history, as this weekend will mark meetings 87, 88 and 89 between the two programs. The Red Storm leads the all-time series, 60-26, and has won 17 of the last 18 matchups between the two teams dating back to the 2014 season.
Following the weekend series with Seton Hall, Fordham will make the trip to Queens for the third game of the season between the two teams on Wednesday. The Johnnies will then welcome Providence to Red Storm Field next weekend for a three-game series.
