Queens, N.Y. – The St. John's Men's Tennis team continued its perfect start to the 2021 campaign, dropping Queens College, 6-0, at the St. John's Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon.
The match marks the seventh time in eight tries that the Red Storm has blanked an opponent thus far in 2021, as it extended its winning streak to eight games. Through all of their competitions spanning the last month, the Johnnies have dropped just one of 45 possible team points.
Tuesday afternoon's match began with doubles play on a beautiful spring day in Queens, as the pairings of Ignacio Garcia and Giuseppe de Camelis, Djuro Opacic and Evan Felcher, as well as Charlie James and Louis-nils Michel each took their matches by scores of 6-3.
After grabbing the point in doubles it was onto singles play, where the Red Storm dominated the Knights. Opacic faced off with Tim Ostheimer on the No. 1 court, winning in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2. The victory marked the sixth of the season for Opacic and his fifth in the top slot thus far in 2021.
On the No. 2 court, Garcia notched his fourth win of the season, blanking his opponent, Kareem Rashad, 6-0 and 6-0, over the two-set victory. The No. 3 slot was dominated by Michel, who also won, 6-0 and 6-0, to secure his fifth victory of the 2021 season. After going 5-7 a season ago, the senior transfer has already matched his win total from 2020.
On the No. 4 court, Felcher defeated Mariano Bibiloni, 6-2 and 6-4, to secure his sixth victory of the season which is tied with de Camelis after he won his match, 6-0 and 6-1, on the No. 5 court. De Camelis continues the dominant start to his collegiate career, where he has now won 19 of his 23 matches in singles play. Dylan Loru slotted into the No. 6 spot for the Red Storm, but his contest went down as a DNF.
The Red Storm's match originally scheduled for this Thursday has been canceled due to Covid-19 protocols within the Army program. The Johnnies will next be in action on Sunday when they travel to Stamford, CT. to take on Boston University in a neutral-site matchup.
