Johnnies will look to build off their 7-0 start to 2021
Queens, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will look to continue its perfect start to the 2021 campaign when it matches up with Queens College and Army this upcoming week.
The Red Storm (7-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) will welcome its intra-borough foe to the St. John's Tennis Courts on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., while it will travel to West Point to take on Army on Thursday at 2 p.m.
The Johnnies are coming off of a dominant effort at Rider in a doubleheader on Sunday in which they took both matches by scores of 4-0 and 6-0. Through seven contests, the team has lost just one team point, as its current tally stands at an astounding 38-1 nearly a month into the 2021 campaign.
Dylan Loru and Giuseppe De Camelis each won two singles matches on Sunday, as both remained undefeated while Loru picked up his fifth victory of 2021, which is tied for the most on the team. As for De Camelis, the sophomore from Italy is now 17-3 in his collegiate career.
Djuro Opacic continued his dominance on the No. 1 court for the Red Storm, where he won his match to improve to 4-0 on the season and extend his match winning streak to nine dating back to last season. Ignacio Garcia won on the No. 1 court in the second match.
Tuesday's match will mark the first of the season for Queens College, as the Knights have not played in a competitive match since March 6, 2020. A season ago, the team went 6-1, with all six wins coming in a row to close out the spring season. The last time that these two programs faced off came way back in 2012, which resulted in a Red Storm victory, 6-1.
The Johnnies are more familiar with Thursday's opponent, Army, as the two squads matched up just last year. The match was played on Jan. 26 and the result was a Red Storm victory, 4-0, as Charlie James and De Camelis picked up a doubles victory while De Camelis also won his singles match against the Black Knights. Despite having seven matches postponed or canceled already this season, the Black Knights are 3-1. Most recently, the team took on NJIT in New Jersey and picking up the victory, 4-3.
Following these two matches, the Red Storm will play one more contest in the month of March on Sunday, as it will travel to Connecticut for a neutral site matchup with Boston University. When the calendar flips to April, BIG EAST play will get underway for the Johnnies against Villanova next Friday.
