Red Storm drops Boston University, 7-0, on Sunday Night
STAMFORD, CONN. – The St. John's men's tennis team improved to 9-0 on Sunday night with yet another shutout victory, dropping Boston University, 7-0, at a neutral site in Stamford, Conn.
The Red Storm is nearly perfect thus far in 2021, having picked up 51 of 52 possible team points on the year. The Johnnies effort on Sunday was a reflection of how dominant the squad has been this season, as the Terriers picked up a slim victory on the No. 2 court in doubles before the Red Storm rattled off all six singles points in straight sets.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish paired up Ignacio Garcia and Giuseppe De Camelis on the No. 1 court, as the duo was taken to a tiebreaker but prevailed, 7-6. Louis-nils Michel and Charlie James dropped their match on the No. 2 court as Djuro Opacic and Evan Felcher dominated the No. 3, 6-2.
The Red Storm took the team point for its seventh time in eight tries this season before it was onto singles, where Opacic once again snatched a straight-set victory on the No. 1 court, 6-3 and 6-3. It was the senior from Serbia's seventh win of the season and sixth in that slot.
Garcia put forth the most dominant singles effort of the day for the Johnnies, winning his contest on the No. 2 court, 6-0 and 6-1. Dating back to last season, Garcia is now a perfect 14-0 in singles matches played in the No's. 1-3 slots. The No. 3 court was the most competitive of the evening, but Michel prevailed, 6-4 and 7-5, to secure yet another victory.
On the No. 4 court, James won in two sets by retirement and over on the No. 5 court, Felcher took his match, 6-1 and 6-2. The junior, who was playing in his own state, picked up his seventh singles victory of the season which is tied for tops on the team. Finally on the No. 6 court, De Camelis also picked up his seventh victory of the season, 6-2 and 6-1.
The Red Storm will play two matches next week, as it opens BIG EAST on Wednesday at home against Villanova on Wednesday. The Johnnies will then welcome Monmouth to Queens on Saturday.
