Red Storm, Terriers to battle at a neutral site on Sunday
Stamford, Conn. (March 27, 2021) – The St. John's men's tennis team travels to Stamford, Conn. this Sunday to take on Boston University in a neutral site battle at the Chelsea Piers Tennis Courts beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The Red Storm (8-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) looks continue its undefeated start to the 2021 campaign while the Terriers (2-3, 0-1 Patriot League) looks to snap their three-game winning streak.
Last time out, the Johnnies took down Queens College, 6-0, at the St. John's Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon. It marked the seventh time already this season that a Red Storm opponent has not recorded a team point, as St. John's has earned 44 of 45 possible points to begin the season.
The Johnnies eight-match winning streak is the longest such stretch the team has gone on dating back to the 2019 campaign in which it ripped off 13 consecutive victories en route to a BIG EAST Tennis Championship.
Djuro Opacic improved to 6-0 on the season and 5-0 on the No. 1 court with his victory, 6-3 and 6-2. Both Giuseppe De Camelis and Evan Felcher each picked up their sixth wins of the year as well against Queens College, tying them with Opacic for the team lead in singles victories. The Red Storm has not lost a singles contest through its first eight matches in 2021.
As for Boston University, the Terriers opened their season with two consecutive victories over Merrimack, 7-0 and 4-3, back on Feb. 27. Since then, the squad has dropped three matches, with two coming against Bryant and the other while taking on Colgate. Senior David Bogatin has been named a Patriot League Player of the Week once this season and was named to the 2019 Patriot League First Team.
The two teams matched up a season ago, with the Johnnies winning, 4-0, thanks in part to singles victories from Charlie James and De Camelis.
Following Sunday's match, the Red Storm will look towards BIG EAST play as it will welcome Villanova to the St. John's Tennis Courts on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
