Red Storm and Friars ready to renew BIG EAST rivalry
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team will look to build off of last weekend's series victory when it welcomes Providence to Queens this weekend for a three-game BIG EAST showdown at Red Storm Field.
Saturday will feature a twin bill between the two squads beginning at noon before a single game on Sunday which will also be played at 12 p.m. All three games can be streamed on ESPN3 and live stats will be available via RedStormSports.com. This weekend will also mark the Red Storm's annual NFCA Strikeout Cancer Game in support of those with breast cancer.
The Red Storm (5-8, 2-4 BIG EAST) come into the weekend off of an 8-4 midweek defeat at the hands of Fordham in Queens. The contest, which was played almost entirely through rain, lasted just five innings as the raindrops began to pick up. The bottom of the order led the way for the Johnnies offensively, as Elyse Morris, Amelia Ditolvo and Kamryn Tiumalu combined for four hits, three RBIs and a run scored.
The Red Storm was able to take last weekend's series against Seton Hall, 2-1, behind timely offense and two wins in the circle for Kayla Kmett. Gretchen Bowie was the star over the three-game set, leading the BIG EAST with six hits in conference play a week ago en route to her program-record fifth career BIG EAST Player of the Week honor. Senior outfielder Kalei Sorensen contributed three RBIs of her own in Sunday's rubber match to give the Johnnies the victory.
While Bowie has been on a tear of late, it has been Marissa Rizzi leading the way for the Johnnies this season offensively, hitting .485 with a conference-best 20 runs scored. Heading into the week, Rizzi's batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage were atop the BIG EAST and in the top 20 in the nation.
The Friars (2-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) enter the series not having played in two weeks, as their three-game set with DePaul last weekend was canceled due to Covid-19 protocols on the side of the Blue Demons. Providence has struggled offensively this year, hitting .186 with just one home run through seven games, but has been led by its pitching, specifically freshman Tori Grifone, who has thrown to a 1.68 ERA in three starts.
Providence is the most commonly played opponent in St. John's softball history, as the two teams have faced off 92 times, with the Red Storm holding the advantage, 52-40. The Johnnies have won eight of the last ten meetings between the two teams.
Next week, the Red Storm will hop on a flight for first time in 2021 as it heads to Indianapolis to take on Butler.
