St. John’s Men’s Tennis Opens BIG EAST Play with Villanova

Red Storm looks to improve to 10-0 in 2021
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will look to build off its 9-0 start to the season when it welcomes Villanova to Queens on Wednesday afternoon to open BIG EAST play.
The match will be played indoors at USTA National Tennis Center and is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
The Johnnies have had a nearly perfect start to the 2021 campaign, as they have picked up 51 of 52 possible team points thus far and have not lost a singles contest through nine dual matches. Most recently on Sunday night, the Red Storm finished off a 2-0 week with a 7-0 victory over BU in Stamford, Conn.
Ignacio Garcia was one of the more dominant Johnnies last week, as he won both of his singles matches on the No. 2 court in straight sets. On Tuesday against Queens College, the senior from San Juan, Puerto Rico blanked his opponent, and followed it up on Sunday by taking his match, 6-0 and 6-1. Since last season, Garcia is 14-0 in singles matches played in the Nos. 1-3 slots.
Djuro Opacic has been nearly as dominant on the No. 1 court this season, where he was won six matches and seven in total thus far in 2021. The senior from Serbia has won 11 consecutive singles matches dating back to last season.
The matchup with the Wildcats marks the first BIG EAST competition for the Red Storm since Feb. 23, 2020, when it dropped Butler, 6-1. The Johnnies played just two conference matches in 2020, as they also defeated Xavier just a few days earlier, 6-1. The Red Storm has never dropped a BIG EAST match under Head Coach Dillon Pottish, as it is 9-0 including postseason play.
As for Villanova, they are 5-5 on the season and come into this match riding a two-game winning streak following its defeat of La Salle, 4-3, on Sunday. The match with the Red Storm will also mark the first conference battle of 2021 for the Wildcats. The last time these two teams matched up back in 2019, St. John's prevailed, 4-0.
The matchup with Villanova is just one of two BIG EAST contests on the calendar for the Red Storm, as it will also battle Georgetown on April 11. This weekend, the Johnnies will welcome Monmouth to Queens on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup.
