Freshman nets her first career goal in the 100th minute
Following a night full of narrow misses for the St. John's women's soccer team, freshman Frederique St.-Jean finally broke through for the Red Storm in the 100th minute of action. St.-Jean recorded a golden goal to push the Johnnies past Villanova, 1-0, on Thursday night at Belson Stadium.
The Red Storm's win over Villanova marked its third-straight overtime victory against the Wildcats. With the win, the Johnnies improve to 4-0-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in conference action.
After recording three shots early in overtime, the Red Storm (4-0-0, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) earned a fourth opportunity with less than a minute remaining in the period. Zsani Kajan drew a yellow card on Villanova's Alexa Wojnovich, awarding the Johnnies a free kick in the offensive zone. The Budapest, Hungary, native sent a rocket towards the center of the goal that ricocheted off the cross bar. St.-Jean, the rookie from Quebec, Canada, was positioned perfectly, heading home the rebound to secure the victory for St. John's.
Naya Lipkens recorded her third-straight clean sheet and fourth win in as many games this season. The Bloomfield, Conn., native turned aside all five Villanova tries on target.
Six Johnnies played all 100 minutes of action for the Red Storm as St.-Jean, Lipkens, Jessica Garziano, Brooke Boyd, Katherine Turner and Nicole Multer did not come out of the game.
The Johnnies controlled possession over the first 45 minutes of action, outshooting the Wildcats, 10-2, and earning nine corners while allowing none.
St. John's saw arguably its best chance of the opening half with 23 ticks left on the clock, as Maia Cabrera sent a powerful shot to the bottom left corner of the cage, but it was turned aside by the Wildcats' keeper.
Coming out of the locker room, the Red Storm continued to control the momentum of the game, outshooting the Wildcats, 10-3.
With seconds remaining in regulation, Garziano looked to be on the cusp of breaking through for St. John's, firing off consecutive shots. The reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week was blocked on both of her attempts, forcing overtime.
St. John's held the Wildcats without a shot in the extra period before sealing the victory in the 100th minute.
The Johnnies will wrap up their five-game homestand on Sunday, welcoming local foe Seton Hall to Belson Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
