Red Storm hits the road for the first time in 2021
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team will hit the road for the first time in 2021 when it travels to the Bronx to battle Fordham in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
The Red Storm (2-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) and Rams (2-2, 0-0 Atlantic-10) have met five times since the 2015 season, with the Rams taking three of those meetings. Both games of the doubleheader can be followed on live stats via Fordhamsports.com.
St. John's opened 2021 at home last weekend against Rhode Island and UMass-Lowell. The Johnnies routed URI on Friday, 12-3, and followed it up by splitting the Saturday doubleheader with the RiverHawks, taking game one, 8-7, and falling in game two, 6-4.
On Friday, the Johnnies were led by Peyton Cody, who crushed two home runs, including a two-run blast to seal the team's victory in five innings. Cody's five RBIs in that one, in addition to the team's four run first inning, helped seal the Red Storm's first victory of the season. Erin Brown picked up the win in relief of Kayla Kmett, going 3.1 innings and surrendering one run on one hit.
Game one on Saturday was the Marissa Rizzi show, as she clobbered two homers and scored the game-winning run for the Red Storm in its 8-7 victory. The St. John's first baseman hit a whopping .625 over the weekend, adding four RBI's and eight runs scored en route to winning BIG EAST Player of the Week honors. Cody drove in the tying and game-winning runs in the sixth inning with a two RBI double as Angela Saric picked up the win in relief.
The Red Storm bats picked up where they left off in game two, as Gretchen Bowie hit her second home run of the day to grab a 4-3 lead after an inning of play. That was all the Johnnies' offense had in it, however, as the Red Storm was held to just two hits over the final six innings by UMass-Lowell freshman reliver Ryley White and fell, 6-4.
The Rams are 2-2 on the season, as their most recent games were also against UMass-Lowell. The two squads played a doubleheader in the Bronx on Sunday that they split, with the Rams taking the first game, 2-1. This season, Fordham returns pitcher Madie Aughinbaugh, who is in the top-five in nearly every statistical pitching category in program history. The Rams are seven-time defending champions of the Atlantic-10. St. John's leads the all-time series, 14-9.
The Wednesday doubleheader will mark the final tune-up for the Red Storm before they take on DePaul this weekend to open BIG EAST play at home. The teams will play a Saturday doubleheader at Red Storm Field beginning at noon, followed by a single game on Sunday at 11 a.m. All three games will be streamed via ESPN3.
