Red Storm opens busy final week of the regular season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will welcome Temple to Queens for a nonconference battle on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The Red Storm (11-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) and Owls (11-2, 0-1 AAC) will face off on the St. John's Tennis Courts for what will be the first meeting between the programs since the 2018 season.
Last time out, the Johnnies dropped Drexel, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia. The victory marked the 11th in 12 tries this season for the Red Storm, with its only loss coming in the match prior to that against Monmouth.
The Red Storm dropped the team point in doubles, but won each of its singles matches as Djuro Opacic, Ignacio Garcia, Louis-nils Michel, Charlie James, Evan Felcher and Giuseppe De Camelis each won their respective matchups with the Dragons.
Opacic has led the team this season on the No. 1 court, where he has gone a perfect 10-0, as his match win streak now extends to 13 dating back to last season. Garcia has been equally as strong on the No. 2 court for the Johnnies, where he is 8-0 thus far this season and has already earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors.
Felcher has also had a nearly perfect start to the season for the Red Storm in singles play where he leads the squads in wins thus far this season with 11. De Camelis is right behind him, as the Red Storm sophomore has dropped just one of his matches in 2021.
As for Temple, they are coming off a victory over Fordham, 6-1, this past Sunday in Cherry Hill, N.J. It was the Owls second win of the weekend, as they also took down Colgate, 7-0, on Saturday. The lone match that Temple dropped this season came last Wednesday against No. 30 Tulsa, a 6-1 defeat, in the lone conference match they have played this season. Temple is led by Marin Delmas, who holds a 12-1 record in the No. 1 slot this season.
The match marks the third time that the two programs have faced off since 2017, as they split the first two contests with the Red Storm dropping the first, 4-0, and taking the second in 2018, 5-2.
Following its battle with Temple, the Red Storm will close out the regular season with home matches against Fordham and NJIT on Saturday and Sunday before looking towards the BIG EAST Tennis Championships the following weekend.
