Red Storm picks up three singles victories and the team point in doubles in triumph over Owls
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team rode three singles victories and a doubles point to a victory, 4-2, over Temple at the St. John's Tennis Courts on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in Queens.
The Red Storm (12-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) grabbed its 12th win in 13 tries this season over the Owls (11-2, 0-1 MVC) in what was one of its hardest-fought matches of the season to date. Charlie James and Giuseppe De Camelis each took their match in three sets to help lead the Johnnies to the win.
St. John's and Temple fought for the first point of the contest in doubles play, where the Red Storm's Ignacio Garcia and James won their match on the No. 1 court, 6-4, while Djuro Opacic and Evan Felcher took their match on the No. 2 court, 6-3. Temple grabbed a victory on the No. 3 court, but regardless, the Johnnies led, 1-0, in the match after doubles play.
Opacic took his typical spot on the No. 1 court but had an unusual result, falling in straight sets to Temple's Marin Delmas, 6-2 and 6-3. The loss snapped a winning streak of 13 matches for the Red Storm senior dating back to last season.
On the No. 2 court, Garcia won another in straight sets, 6-2 and 7-6, to grab his ninth victory of 2021. The Red Storm senior has been dominant in 2021, winning all of his matches in straight sets, with seven of those coming in the No. 2 slot.
James played a tough match on the No. 3 court, battling three sets with Eric Biscoveanu and taking the decisive set by a score of 6-4. The win was the junior's seventh in eight tries this season and the first in the No. 3 slot.
De Camelis' match on the No. 4 court also went the distance, heading to a third set, but the Red Storm sophomore prevailed, 6-2, in the final frame of his match. De Camelis continues to be a force in a Johnnies uniform, where he is 10-1 thus far this season and 23-5 overall in his collegiate career in singles play.
The No. 5 court is where Temple picked up its second point of the day, as Thibault Frumholz handed Felcher his first loss of the season in straight sets, 7-6 and 6-2. Dylan Loru's match on the No. 6 court was not finished.
The Red Storm has two contests remaining in the 2021 regular season, as it will welcome Fordham to Queens on Saturday at 2 p.m. before closing out its campaign against NJIT on Sunday at 1 p.m. The BIG EAST Tennis Championships will kick off next Thursday in Cayce, S.C.
