Jack Simon sits atop the leaderboard with a score of 4-under 136
A strong performance by junior Jack Simon puts the St. John's men's golf team in first place following the opening two rounds of The Doc Gimmler at Bethpage State Park Red Course on Saturday.
Simon, the reigning BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week, sits atop the leaderboard after firing off a pair of 68s for a two-round score of 4-under 136 through 36 holes of play. The Sparta, N.Y., native drained a tournament-high 10 birdies to hold a one-stroke advantage.
"The team is feeling good about their respective games and their scores reflected that," said Head Coach Mal Galletta. "It was also nice to see Jack continue his great play following his back-to-back BIG EAST weekly honors."
As a team, the Red Storm squad turned in a 4-under 556 to sit 11-strokes clear of Hartford and Iona, who are tied for second through 36 holes of play.
Junior Tyler Gerbavsits produced a top-five performance for the Johnnies, turning in scores of 68 and 70 to sign off on a 2-under 138. The Huntington, N.Y., native fired off five birdies on the day.
Rookie Doug Beney and sophomores Ryan Rittberger and Alex Kyriacou also finished inside the top-10. Beney opened up the day with a low-round 69 before closing out action with a 73 to finish in a tie for seventh. Rittberger and Kyriacou both shot a two-round 143 to tie for ninth.
Junior Joseph Busiello, who was competing as an individual, posted a 71 and 74 on the day.
Sophomore Gage Wolfle finished seven-strokes back of Busiello, shooting and 75 and 77 for St. John's.
The Red Storm will resume play at Bethpage State Park Red Course tomorrow. Live results will be available throughout the day via Golfstat and will be posted to RedStormSports.com at the conclusion of the round.
