The Red Storm host the Hoyas at 1 p.m.
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 2, 2021) – The St. John's lacrosse team will be back in action for the first time in nearly two weeks on Saturday when the Johnnies play host to No. 10/10 Georgetown at DaSilva Memorial Field. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The game will be produced live by SJU-TV and can be viewed on ESPN3, available on ESPN.com/watch and ESPN app. Austin Rooney will have the call from Queens.
St. John's (1-4, 0-4 BIG EAST) will return to the field after its last two games, both against Marquette, were postponed due to COVID concerns. In the Red Storm's last outing against Villanova on March 14, its offense was led by redshirt Junior Jonathan Huber, who scored four goals in the loss. Dylan Willis, Connor Kalmus, Joe Madsen and Mike Madsen also tallied one goal apiece against the Wildcats. Kalmus' marker was the first of his collegiate career.
Senior netminder Gavin Catalano has earned the start between the pipes in the past two affairs, posting 26 saves over that span. In his first career start against Denver, he collected a game-high 19 saves and one assist. In his three outings for the Johnnies this season, Catalano ranks sixth in the conference for saves per game with 9.6, which is just above Georgetown's Owen McElroy.
The Red Storm currently ranks third in the BIG EAST for ground balls (28.0) and second in caused turnovers (9.5) per game.
Georgetown (6-1, 5-1 BIG EAST) has won four of its five games since last playing St. John's on February 27. The Hoyas one loss came on the road against No.10/10 Denver, 13-7, when Georgetown was ranked fourth in the country. Georgetown's high flying offense was no match for the Pioneers, despite Junior Delcan McDemott's five points and two goals apiece from Jake Carraway and Graham Bundy Jr. The Hoyas responded by defeating their next two opponents Providence, 14-9, and Villanova, 8-7, on back-to-back Saturdays.
McElroy, the Hoyas' senior netminder, recently earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Ridgewood, N.J., native collected 11 saves against Villanova offense and came up with some crucial saves late in the game when the score was tied. Defenseman Will Tominovich was named the conference's Freshman of the Week after causing three turnovers and scooping up four ground balls last week.
Georgetown has ranked as high as no. 4 in both the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Coaches Poll and Inside lacrosse polls this spring. The 2019 BIG EAST Champions were picked to finish second in the league's preseason coaches' poll, one spot behind Denver. The Hoyas have captured the last two conference championships.
Sunday will mark the 21st all-time meeting between the two programs, with the Hoyas leading the series, 16-4. The Red Storm's last contest with Georgetown at DaSilva Memorial Field was on April 28, 2018, when the Johnnies fell to the Hoyas, 11-6.
