Red Storm and Pirates will resume longtime rivalry
St. John's and Seton Hall will renew one of the nation's longest running baseball rivalries on Friday afternoon when the two teams begin a four-game set at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
The squads are scheduled to meet for a single game on Friday and a Saturday doubleheader, all three of which are scheduled to air on ESPN3. The Johnnies and the Pirates will then wrap their series on Sunday afternoon in a game that will feature an audio broadcast on RedStormSports.com
St. John's (11-10, 2-5 BIG EAST) will look to get back on the winning track this weekend against its longtime BIG EAST rival. The Red Storm is coming off a four-game set at Georgetown that saw the nine-time league champions fall three times to an upstart Hoyas squad. The Johnnies also lost their opening series of BIG EAST play to Xavier, dropping two of three against the Musketeers two weekends ago at The Jack.
Despite the slow start to conference play, starting pitching has not been much of an issue for the Johnnies against league foes. Of the Red Storm's four scheduled weekend starters, two have an ERA of 3.00 or better and the entire quartet boasts an ERA of 4.50 or better during BIG EAST action. Cumulatively, the rotation sports a strikeout-to-walk ratio of just under 2-to-1. Leading the way for the Red Storm's hurlers is fifth-year southpaw Nick Mondak, who carries a record of 3-2 on the year with a 2.06 ERA. The Watertown, Conn., product is holding opponents to a .219 batting average and has issued just 13 walks while fanning 41 batters in a staff-high 35.0 innings pitched.
As a team, St. John's is hitting just .241 on the season, including a .192 showing in seven BIG EAST games. Among players that have appeared in all seven league contests, Ryan Hogan is the team leader in batting average at .267 during BIG EAST play.
After missing the first four games of conference action, Justin Folz returned to the lineup on Saturday and turned in a solid showing, batting .333 with a home run and a double in three appearances. Graduate student second baseman Carson Bartels also had a standout weekend at the dish down in Frederick, logging a double and two roundtrippers while driving in eight runs in four games.
The Red Storm is hoping that a return to Jack Kaiser Stadium will recapture some of the magic that the Johnnies enjoyed during a seven-game winning streak at home to start the season. In those seven wins against UMass Lowell and Sacred Heart, the Johnnies hit .322 and averaged 9.0 runs per contest. Five of the team's everyday starters-- Folz, Hogan, Jake Lazzaro, Brandon Miller and David Williams-- hit .360 or better during that season-opening stretch. The Johnnies' pitching was also nearly unhittable during that time, compiling a 1.03 earned run average, .154 opponent batting average and striking out 10.2 batters per nine innings.
Seton Hall comes to Queens on a tear to open BIG EAST play, having won six of its first seven league games. The Pirates took three of four from Butler on opening weekend in South Orange before sweeping a three-game set from Villanova this past weekend in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
Seton Hall is 13-13 overall on the season, having lost series on the road to Florida Atlantic, Davidson and Kent State. The Pirates and the Red Storm have one common non-conference opponent: Fordham. The Johnnies split a four-game set with the Rams two weeks before the Pirates won two of three.
Seton Hall enters the weekend hitting .258 as a team. Four Pirates are hitting .290 or better led by reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Devin Hack at .375. Senior infielder Casey Dana is batting at a .372 clip while leading the team in doubles (10), home runs (3) and RBIs (18).
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing cancelation of the 2020 baseball season forced St. John's and Seton Hall to not play one another on the diamond for just the fourth time since 1956. The two teams also did not meet in 2007, 1998 and 1989.
Seton Hall is the most frequently played opponent in St. John's history, as the two teams have met 156 times since 1956. The Red Storm owns an 84-72 advantage in those games, including a 35-27 edge in Queens.
When the Red Storm and Pirates last squared off in 2019, the Johnnies secured a three-game sweep that propelled them into the BIG EAST Tournament and preserved a conference-record streak of 16 consecutive postseason appearances. The year prior in 2018, the Red Storm won its league-best ninth BIG EAST Tournament title by shutting out the Pirates, 7-0, in the championship's decisive game at Prasco Park.
