Red Storm will look to even the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
The St. John's baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Pirates took the first game, 11-1, before prevailing in latter contest by a score of 19-4.
St. John's fell to 12-12, including a 3-7 BIG EAST mark with the losses. Seton Hall improved to 15-14 overall, 8-2 in league action.
Game One
Leading 1-0 after four innings, Seton Hall outscored the Red Storm by a 10-1 margin over the final three frames, taking game one of the doubleheader, 11-1, in seven innings.
Starting pitcher Ian Murphy exited the game with one out in the top of the second following an apparent injury. He was tagged with the loss despite allowing just one hit.
Two of the Red Storm's four hits went for extra bases, as David Glancy and Ryan Hogan legged out doubles. Brandon Miller and Carson Bartels added base knocks for St. John's. Bartels scored the Red Storm's only run of the contest.
After Murphy retired the Pirates in order in the first, the Pirates used a Matt Toke walk and a sac bunt to set up an RBI single from Tyler Shedler-McAvoy, giving Seton Hall the first lead of the day.
Matt Semon stranded a pair of Seton Hall runners in the third and worked a 1-2-3 fourth before the Pirates blew the game open in the fifth. Highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of Casey Dana, the Pirates hung up four runs in the frame, pushing their lead to 5-0 after four and a half.
St. John's responded with a single run in the home half of the fifth, as Bartels laced a leadoff single off the glove of Dana at third before coming around to score on an error by Seton Hall second baseman Zack Sylvester a few batters later.
The Pirates answered by plating six runs over the next two innings, as Jerry Huntzinger hit a two-run double in the sixth before Alex Clyde and Steve Grober went back-to-back in the seventh. Clyde's roundtripper brought in three runs for Seton Hall.
Game Two
After St. John's jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame, Seton Hall took control of the game in the middle innings en route to a 19-4 victory in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The contest was called after seven innings.
The Johnnies nearly equaled their hit total from all of game one in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs on three hits to take the early lead. Chris Conniff started things off with a single through the right side before Hogan and Nick Cirelli walked to load the bases. Vincent Bianchi then stepped to the plate and delivered a two-RBI knock through the right side. Next up was Colin Wetterau, who reached on a run-scoring fielder's choice to make it 3-0 in favor of the home side.
After a scoreless second, Seton Hall evened the score with three runs on three hits in the top of the third. Huntzinger pulled a two-run double down the left field line before a sac fly off the back of Devin Hack made it a 3-3 game.
Following a scoreless home half, Seton Hall ballooned its lead with a five-run fourth. The Pirates sent 10 batters to the plate in the frame.
The Red Storm looked as if it might quickly cut into the nascent Seton Hall lead in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with one out. Joe Cinnella, however, worked a popout and a grounder to first, escaping the jam unscathed and preserving the 8-3 Seton Hall lead.
Seton Hall added onto its advantage with three runs in the top of the sixth before Hogan and Marty Higgins strung together a couple of base knocks to plate a run and cut the Seton Hall advantage to seven, 11-4, after six.
The Pirates put the game out of reach with an eight-run seventh.
St. John's and Seton Hall will wrap their series with a 1 p.m. Sunday matinee at Jack Kaiser Stadium. An audio broadcast of the game will be available on RedStormSports.com
