Red Storm looks to get back in the win column against the Dragons
Queens, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will look to shake off its Saturday loss to Monmouth when it travels to Drexel for a matchup with the Dragons on Thursday afternoon.
The Red Storm (10-1) and Dragons (0-2) will face off at 2 p.m. in a match that was originally scheduled to be played way back on March 6 but was postponed due to Covid-19 concerns within the Dragons program.
The Johnnies are coming off of their first loss of the season, 4-3, at the hands of Monmouth this past Saturday in Queens. In that match, Djuro Opacic and Ignacio Garcia each picked up victories on the No. 1 and 2 courts, while Evan Felcher grabbed his team-leading tenth victory of the season on the No. 5 court.
Opacic and Garcia have been leading the way on the No. 1 and 2 courts all season for the Red Storm, as Opacic has posted a 9-0 record to this point on the year, with eight of those victories coming on the No. 1 court. The senior from Serbia is now 13-0 dating back to last spring, where he ripped off four consecutive singles victories before the season was canceled.
As for Garcia, his performance of late has been recognized by the BIG EAST, where he was named the conference's Player of the Week last Thursday. Garcia continued his strong play in the two matches following that selection, winning both of his matches in straight sets.
Drexel has played just two matches thus far in 2021, as they have seen five contests either postponed or canceled. The Dragons two losses this season came to NJIT, 4-3, back on Feb. 21 and most recently to Temple, 6-1, this past Saturday. A year ago, Drexel was 7-5, including a 3-0 mark at home, before the season was canceled due to Covid-19.
The Johnnies and Dragons matched up last year on Jan. 29 with the result being a 5-0 Red Storm victory. Giuseppe De Camelis and Charlie James each picked up singles wins in that contest.
The Red Storm has just three more matches on its schedule to close out the 2021 campaign as it will welcome Temple, Fordham and NJIT to Queens next week.
