Red Storm improves to 11-1 on the season
Philadelphia, Pa. – The St. John's men's tennis team took down Drexel, 6-1, on the road in Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon.
The win marked the team's 11th on the season as the Red Storm rebounded after suffering its first defeat last Saturday against Monmouth. The Johnnies have been dominant in each of the matches they have won this season, either blanking their opponent or holding them to one team point in every match. Outside of the contest against Monmouth, St. John's has not lost a singles match all season.
The lone team point that the Johnnies didn't capture on the afternoon came in doubles, as Ignacio Garcia and Giuseppe De Camelis along with Charlie James and Louis-nils Michel fell on the Nos. 1 and 3 courts, while Djuro Opacic and Evan Felcher took their match on the No. 2 court, 6-4.
Opacic took the No. 1 court and grabbed his tenth victory of the season in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0. The win marked the senior from Serbia's ninth of the campaign on the No. 1 court. On the No. 2 court, Garcia took his match due to a win by retirement in the second set. The victory marked Garcia's eighth of the 2021 season in singles play.
Michel was strong on the No. 3 court as well for the Johnnies, picking up a victory, 6-4 and 6-2, to continue building on his career-high wins total this season. The No. 4 court was one of the more tightly contested matches of the afternoon, as James prevailed in three sets, winning the first, 7-6, and the third in convincing fashion, 10-2.
Felcher got the nod on the No. 5 court and was strong yet again for the Red Storm, taking his match, 6-1 and 6-3, to grab his 11th victory of the season which is tops on the team. The matchup on the No. 6 court went to three sets, as De Camelis took the first and third sets by scores of 6-3 to seal the 6-1 victory for the Red Storm.
