Red Storm and Musketeers to play three-game series instead of four as originally scheduled
The St. John's baseball team will take the field on Friday afternoon for the first time in nearly three weeks, welcoming Xavier to Jack Kaiser Stadium for the start of a three-game BIG EAST series. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. All three games of this weekend's series will be broadcast on ESPN3. Saturday's contest is slated to start at noon before series finale kicks off at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Red Storm has not played since splitting a four-game series with Fordham from March 19-21. The lengthy layoff was the result of prolonged COVID-19 issues within the St. John's program that forced the cancelation of non-conference series with East Carolina and Hofstra.
The Johnnies and Musketeers were originally scheduled for four games this weekend, but the series was shortened as a result of the lingering effects of the COVID pause.
In that series against the Rams three weeks ago, the Red Storm took the opener, coming out on the winning end of a pitchers' duel between Nick Mondak and Fordham's Matt Mikulski. The teams then split a Saturday doubleheader in the Bronx, as Fordham took the first outing, 7-6, in 13 innings before the Johnnies answered in game two with a 4-3 seven-inning victory. Sunday's finale was another closely contested extra-inning affair, as St. John's scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to force bonus baseball before Fordham plated the game-winning run in the top of the 10th.
Redshirt freshman Jake Lazzaro hit .385 in four starts against the Rams, going 5-for-13 with two doubles, a triple and four runs scored. The Oceanside, N.Y., native also drew a team-high seven walks and went a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts. For his efforts, he was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on March 22. On the year, Lazzaro is hitting .327, good enough for tops on the team among players that have appeared in at least 50 percent of the Red Storm's games. His 17 walks lead the squad and the BIG EAST while his 1.21 walks per contest rank third nationally through games played on Wednesday.
Lazzaro is one of three Johnnies to have started every game so far this season, joined by Ryan Hogan and Brandon Miller. Hogan is hitting an even .300 with five doubles and a home run while Miller is batting at a .255 clip. Colin Wetterau, who has started four of his six appearances, is hitting .462 with a .632 on-base percentage.
Mondak will take the ball again on Friday, carrying a 2-1 record with a 1.88 ERA into the series with the Musketeers. The redshirt junior has allowed one run or fewer in three of his four starts, striking out 26 batters and issuing only seven walks. Ian Murphy will start on Saturday and look to regain a touch that saw him strike out 13 batters in 11.0 innings with no earned runs during his first two starts of the season. Tyler Roche, a highly touted freshman from the Bronx, is scheduled to make his first collegiate start on Sunday.
Xavier comes to Queens with a record of 9-13 after closing non-conference play by taking three out of four from local rival Dayton. The Musketeers also split a four-game non-league series with Cincinnati after opening the season by taking two of three from Texas A&M in College Station.
As a team, the Musketeers are hitting .245 with two everyday players batting better than .300. Junior outfielder Andrew Walker is hitting .395 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in 15 outings. Jack Housinger, a junior infielder and member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, is hitting .310 with seven doubles and three round trippers in 19 appearances, all of which have been starts.
Also a preseason All-BIG EAST selection, Nick Zwack is scheduled to take the ball on Friday for the Musketeers. The senior southpaw is 2-2 with a 4.60 ERA in six starts this season. Junior right-hander Lane Flamm is slated to go on Saturday before senior left-hander Trevor Olson and his staff-leading 2.35 ERA close out the series on Sunday.
St. John's is 14-10 against Xavier since the Musketeers joined the BIG EAST for the 2013-14 academic year.
The two teams met five times in 2019, as the Musketeers took two of three from the Johnnies in Queens before the teams split a pair of meetings in the BIG EAST Tournament.
In 2018 at Xavier's Hayden Field, the Red Storm dropped the Friday series opener before scoring a school record 34 runs in the Saturday game. The Johnnies would go on to claim the series with a 9-4 win on Sunday.
