St. John’s Heads to BIG EAST Outdoor Championships

The Johnnies earned a third-place finish in 2019
QUEENS, N.Y. (May 13, 2021) – After having its outdoor season cancelled last spring due to COVID-19, the St. John's track & field team travels to Geneva, Ohio, for the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships at SPIRE Institute, beginning on Friday at 11 a.m.
The two-day meet will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network's YouTube channel and on FloTrack. Coverage will begin at 12 p.m. each day with live results available on bigeast.com.
The Red Storm will look to improve upon its third-place finish at the 2019 conference outdoor championships. Leah Anderson was named the BIG EAST Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer of the meet after securing three gold medals in the 200 meters, 400 meters, and the 4x400-meter relay.
Anderson will look to continue her success in the 400 meters during the prelims on Friday at 1:20 p.m. The senior sprinter qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships at the Army Twilight Meet on April 23, recording a time of 52.95. The mark currently ranks 40th in the nation and leads the conference. Anderson also holds the top time in the 200 meters with a mark of 23.67.
Skyy Diop sits in fifth place on the BIG EAST leaderboard in the 400 meters with a time of 55.14.
Eleftheria Christogeorgou will represent the Johnnies in the high jump on Saturday at 2 p.m. Christogeorgou was named the BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after clearing a height of 1.78 meters at the West Point Twilight Meet on May 6. The mark secured Christogeorgou a spot at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, ranking 37th in the country and 19th on the East Region qualifying list.
Junior Samantha Morillo enters the meet ranked third in the BIG EAST with a distance of 14.64 meters in the shot put. Morillo also sits in fourth on the conference leaderboard in the discus throw, recording another personal best mark of 44.71 meters at the Army Twilight Meet.
Amarys Berry, the reigning BIG EAST Outdoor Champion in the shot put, currently ranks fifth in the league with a distance of 13.72 meters.
Olivia Pantale carries a distance of 40.85 meters in the javelin throw while Nina D'Amato holds a mark of 40.64 meters.
The St. John's 4x100-meter relay squad maintains the second-best mark in the BIG EAST, registering a time of 46.07 earlier this season.
Meghan Ladd will look for a strong performance in the pole vault on Friday. Ladd cleared a height of 3.23 meters at the Army Twilight Meet.
Zamira Ysaac and Stephanie Gerland will also compete for gold in their respective events. Ysaac currently ranks seventh in the conference with a time of 1:06.35 in the 400-meter hurdles while Gerland sits in ninth on the league's top 10 list in the 3000 meters with a mark of 10:24.40.
