Creighton takes the series, three games to one
The St. John's baseball team dropped its series finale with Creighton on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Bluejays by a score of 11-4 at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
After going 2-for-4 with an RBI during the Red Storm's game three victory on Saturday night, redshirt junior Brian Morrell tallied career highs of three hits and three RBIs for the Johnnies on Sunday.
Following a three-hit performance of his own in the Red Storm's last outing, Carson Bartels doubled and scored from the lead-off spot.
Vincent Bianchi singled and drove in a run. David Williams, Mitchell Henshaw, Marty Higgins and Chris Conniff also tallied base knocks for the Red Storm.
The Red Storm (14-15, 5-10 BIG EAST) jumped out to an early lead for the third straight game, as Ryan Hogan drew a one-out walk before advancing on a Morrell single and coming around to score on a Bianchi base knock to left.
Creighton (17-9, 9-2 BIG EAST) quickly knotted the score in the bottom of the first on a run-scoring fielder's choice before the Red Storm answered with two runs in the top of the second. With the bases loaded following a pair of walks and a hit batsman, Morrell laced a two-RBI single to left to make it a 3-1 game in favor of the Johnnies.
The Bluejays regained the lead with three runs, including a Ryan Mantle two-run shot to right, in the bottom of the third before exploding for five runs in the fourth.
Morrell made it a five-run game, 9-4, with an RBI single in the sixth. Bartels doubled down the left-field line with one out to set up the play.
Creighton added to its lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
The game was called after eight innings due to travel concerns.
The Red Storm will return to action with a Tuesday midweek game when it takes on La Salle at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
