Red Storm led 3-1 after six innings
Leading 3-1 after six innings, the St. John's baseball team saw Connecticut score three times in the seventh and eighth innings of a 4-3 loss in the series opener between the two squads on Friday night at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
St. John's (14-16, 5-11 BIG EAST) tallied 10 hits, the team's second-highest total of BIG EAST play, but left eight runners on base. The Huskies (21-14, 5-2 BIG EAST) logged 14 hits on the evening.
Nick Mondak started for the Johnnies and recorded six innings of one-run work. The southpaw from Watertown, Conn., surrendered 10 hits, but walked none and struck out six.
Justin Folz registered a season-high three hits in four at-bat. Nick Cirelli and Colin Wetterau both chipped in multi-hit efforts. Wetterau went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored while Cirelli went 2-for-4 and also scored a run.
Carson Bartels and Jake Lazzaro drove in runs for the Red Storm.
The Johnnies went down on strikes 13 times and recorded only one walk against UConn pitching. Austin Peterson fanned eight in seven innings of three-run work to move to 6-1 on the year. Andrew Marrero tossed a scoreless eighth before Caleb Wurster shut the door in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.
St. John's struck first in the bottom of the second, as Cirelli knocked the first pitch of the inning up the middle for a single before Wetterau doubled down the left-field line two batters later. With runners on second and third and one out, Lazzaro pulled a run-scoring grounder to second before a Bartels base knock to center brought home Wetterau to make it 2-0 after two.
After Mondak stranded a pair of UConn runners in the third and fourth innings, the Huskies finally got on the board with a two-out rally in the top of the fifth. Reggie Crawford singled and stole second before coming around to score on a Pat Winkel base knock.
St. John's added back onto its lead in the home half of the sixth. Vincent Bianchi and Cirelli recorded back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on the corners before executing a delayed double steal to score Bianchi from third and push the lead to a pair, 3-1.
Pat Winkel's second RBI of the night in the top of the seventh cut the St. John's lead in half before the Huskies climbed ahead with a pair of runs in the eighth. With runners on second and third, Kyler Fedko delivered a bases-clearing double to right. One of those runs was unearned, as Chris Winkel struck out swinging but reached first on a passed ball.
Folz led off the bottom of the eight with a single, but that would end up being the final hit of the game for the Red Storm. UConn recorded five of its final six outs via the K.
St. John's and Connecticut will resume their series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch of the day's opening tilt is set for 12 p.m. on ESPN3.
