Aliann Pompey Readies for Tokyo Olympics

Aliann Pompey, who will serve on the staff of Guyana, will join two former Johnnies at the games
QUEENS, N.Y. (July 13, 2021) – – St. John's Track & Field and Cross Country Head Coach Aliann Pompey will attend this year's Olympics as a part of Team Guyana.
Pompey, who is president of the Panam Sports Athlete Commission, will serve as Team Guyana's Athletes' Representative. She will attend in place of Guyana Olympic Association President, K.A. Juman-Yassin.
Pompey competed for Guyana at four Summer Olympics: 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012. In 2016, she served as an assistant manager for Guyana at the games held in Rio de Janeiro.
Last month, Pompey was named Head Coach of the Track and Field program after serving on previous Head Coach Jim Hunt's staff for seven years. Outside of the Olympics, Pompey has competed in various other meets. She has competed at the World Athletics Championships eleven times and won the gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. In college, Pompey was an NCAA 400-meter champion.
Pompey will be joined in Tokyo by two other former Johnnies. Marsha Henry-Seagrave, who ran for St. John's from 1990-1994, is the Head Manager for Team USA. Seagrave was a member of the Track and Field program from 1990-1994. She competed in both the long jump and the triple jump and ranks among the best in program history. Former St. John's Head Coach Duffy Mahoney is also a member of Team USA as the Chief of Sport Performance.
The Summer 2021 Olympic Games will begin in the evening on Friday, July 23rd.
