Simon looking to reclaim individual medalist honors
The St. John's men's golf team will continue its fall slate this weekend, as the Johnnies look to defend their title in the team's lone home event, The Doc Gimmler, on Sept. 11-12.
The two-day, 54-hole event will take place at the Bethpage State Park Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y. The format includes 36 holes being played on Saturday and 18 final holes on Sunday. The first round of play will begin at 8 a.m. on the 7,092-yard, par-70 track.
"I am very excited to be hosting The Doc Gimmler at Bethpage red course," said Head Coach Mal Galletta. "We have had a lot of success in the past, including the last time we played the event in the spring. We had a good week at practice and we will be ready to go this weekend."
Last spring at The Doc Gimmler, the Red Storm poured in a team-high 55 birdies to turn in a three-round score of 13-under par. This marked the best score for the team under the direction of Coach Galletta, and the third best in program history. As a team, St. John's dominated the final round, carding a tournament-low 9-under 271 to run away from the field and capture the team championship.
Senior Jack Simon will look to reclaim medalist honors at the Johnnies' home event. Last season, the Sparta, N.J., native fired off a three-round score of 6-under 204 to finish atop the leaderboard. Two other golfers produced top-three finishes for St. John's in the spring, as Tyler Gerbavsits fired a 5-under 205 and Ryan Rittberger signed off on a 3-under 207 to finish second and third overall in the standings.
Freshman Peicheng Chen, who enters the event on the heels of a second place showing at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational last weekend, is slotted as the team's number one golfer. In the Chen's first collegiate event, he fired of 13 birdies for a three-round score of 1-under 215 to claim BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week honors.
Simon, who earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team a season ago, will be playing as the no. 2 golfer. Simon also cracked the top-five in the Red Storm's first event of the season. The senior golfer carded a three-round score of 216, tying Cornell's Benjamin Choe and Yale's Ben Carpenter for fifth place. Simon's final round effort was highlighted by a pair of eagles on the par-4 fourth and par-5 12th holes.
Gerbavsits and Rittberger are slotted in the third and fourth positions, while teammate Joseph Busiello rounds out the five-man lineup for St. John's.
Junior Gage Wolfle, sophomore Doug Beney and freshman Thomas Stafford will all be competing as individuals.
The 14-team field will include St. John's, Iona, Towson, Lafayette, Colgate, Lehigh, Hofstra, Columbia, Yale, Navy, Harvard, Holy Cross as well as BIG EAST foes UConn and Villanova.
In 2013, St. John's renamed the event from The McLaughlin to The Doc Gimmler to honor former Red Storm golf coach Jack "Doc" Gimmler. Gimmler came to St. John's in 1945 and helped lead the baseball team to the school's first College World Series in 1949. After graduating, Gimmler went on to become the head athletic trainer for St. John's before taking over as the head coach of the men's golf team and Associate Director of Athletics.
Gimmler guided his team to the inaugural BIG EAST title in 1979 and led the Johnnies to nine conference championships in the first 11 years of the league's existence. Under Gimmler's direction, St. John's finished either first or second in the BIG EAST in all but one season between 1979 and 1990. The longtime coach also led St. John's to 10 Metropolitan Championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure.
Gimmler passed away in 1996, but will forever be remembered for his impact on collegiate golf, collegiate athletics, and St. John's over his more than four decades of service.
Live scoring for both days will be available via GolfStat and results will be posted to RedStormSports.com at the conclusion of each day.
