St. John’s Falls to Harvard, 3-2, in Overtime

Aviza and Boyd record goals for the Red Storm
Despite a pair of second-half goals from Isabelle Aviza and Brooke Boyd, the St. John's women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, 3-2, in overtime against Harvard on Sunday afternoon.
Aviza tallied her first goal of the season in the 62nd minute off a corner kick from the Red Storm's leading scorer Zsani Kajan. Four minutes later, Boyd tallied her second goal of the 2021 fall campaign. The Silver Spring, Md., native has now found the back of the net for the Red Storm in back-to-back contests.
A trio of Johnnies registered assists on the afternoon, as Kajan Jessica Garziano and Nicole Gordon all picked up helpers for St. John's
Harvard jumped out to an early lead in the fifth minute as Angela Caloia, the Crimson's leading scorer, rocketed a shot from 20 yards out to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
The Crimson struck again in the 29th minute, as Taylor Fasnacht converted off the cross from Hildur Hakonardottir to double Harvard's lead, 2-0.
At the intermission, the Crimson held a 10-2 advantage in shots, including a 6-1 edge in attempts on goal.
The Johnnies began to shift the momentum of the match in second half, registering three solid scoring chances in the first 11 minutes of the second stanza.
In the 59th minute, Harvard nearly made it a 3-0 advantage, but St. John's goalkeeper Naya Lipkens used a diving save to keep the Harvard at bay.
St. John's finally broke through in the 62nd minute, as Aviza found the back of the net to pull the Johnnies within one, 2-1. The play began on a corner kick from Kajan, who found Aviza in the box. The Medway, Mass., native headed the ball home to put St. John's on the board.
Four minutes later, the Johnnies converted on another corner kick, as Boyd headed in the equalizer. This time, Garziano played her corner kick towards the goal. Gordon then headed the ball in the direction of Boyd, who send it in to tie the game at 2-2.
Neither team managed to find the back of the net over the remainder of regulation, forcing overtime.
Eight minutes into the extra period, Harvard's Hannah Bebar sent one over Lipkens' head for the golden goal.
The Red Storm will look to return to its winning ways on Sept. 9, as the Johnnies travel to Newark, Del. for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Delaware Blue Hens.
