Red Storm looks to claim victory in its sixth season opening dual match in the last seven years
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team will get its spring season underway on Saturday evening when it faces Quinnipiac in North Haven, Conn. at 6 p.m. The Red Storm will look to start dual match play off with a victory for the sixth time in the last seven years.
The Johnnies return seven players from their BIG EAST runner-up squad in 2021, highlighted by All-Conference First-Team selection Ignacio Garcia. The redshirt senior posted a 13-0 record in singles competition last season.
The Red Storm welcomes a slew of talented newcomers to the roster as well. Lamar transfer Axel Vila Antuna shines in the fall notching six singles wins across his first three competitions at St. John's. The junior was named the 2021 Southland Player of the Year at Lamar last spring.
Garcia and Vila Antuna put the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, on notice as they were tabbed the no. 56 doubles team in the country in their post-fall rankings. The duo emerged from a bracket of 68 teams and advanced to the semi-finals at the ITA Northeast Regionals.
Quinnipiac comes into the match after dropping its first contest at Brown on Thursday. The Bears defeated the Bobcats handedly in a 7-0 shutout victory.
The match Saturday will mark the first time St. John's has ever faced Quinnipiac on the road. The five previous all-time meetings have all occurred in New York, the Red Storm holds a 5-0 advantage in the series.
