St. John’s Dominates Quinnipiac, 6-1 in Season Opener

Ignacio Garcia extends his singles dual-match win streak to 18
NORTH HAVEN Conn.- The St. John's men's tennis team orchestrated a strong performance in a convincing win over Quinnipiac, 6-1, on Saturday night.
The win over the Bobcats in North Haven, Conn. marked the fifth time in the last six years the Red Storm have begun its season with a victory.
Graduate student Ignacio Garcia extended his dual-match play win streak to 18, dating back to the 2020 season. The 2021 All-BIG EAST First-Team selection defeated Quinnipiac's top man Ayato Arikaki in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
A pair of freshmen, Yaron Guberman and Ryota Kaneda recorded their first wins in dual-match play for the Johnnies. On the no. 4 court, Guberman triumped over Alester Magalit in three sets 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 and Kaneda surrendered just one game, topping Yasha Laskin, 6-1,6-0.
In doubles competition, the Red Storm grabbed the point by claiming victory the first two matches. Garcia and Giuseppe De Camelis beat Kemal Karagazoglu and Javier Casasolas Monilla 6-3, 6-3. Charlie James and Kaneda handedly defeated Magalit and Bryan Shick, 6-1, 6-1.
St. John's will host its home opener when it welcomes Boston College to the USTA National Tennis Center on Jan. 28 at 8 p.m.
