Fares Ferjani impressed in his season debut
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's fencing program competed against four of the top teams in the country on Saturday afternoon at Taffner Fieldhouse.
Both the men's and women's teams fought hard against fencers from Notre Dame, Columbia, Harvard and Ohio State, but they were unable to tally a victory. Both squads finished the day with 0-4 records.
On the men's side, 2020 Olympian Fares Ferjani made the most of his season debut in the saber category. The Tunisia native tallied nine victories, accounting for more than half of the saber team's wins. In the foil section, Jan Jurkiewicz continued to post strong results. The sophomore out of Torun, Poland, matched Ferjani's total of nine wins. Jurkiewicz now has 22 victories over his past two team competitions.
Epee specialists Andrea Rizzi and Nicole Gavrilko combined for 10 wins to lead the way for the women's team. Julia Cieslar impressed in her Red Storm debut, notching eight wins to lead the saber specialists.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Feb. 13 when it travels to Brooklyn to take part in the City Square Off.
