The Red Storm earns wins over local rivals Columbia, Hunter College, LIU and NYU
BROOKLYN, N.Y.- The St. John's fencing team made the short trip to Brooklyn to take part in the LIU Shark Showcase on Sunday afternoon. Both the men's and women's teams won two out of their three matches, respectively. All but one weapons team finished the day with a winning record.
On the men's side, Fares Ferjani and Cesar Colon tied for the most individual wins with seven apiece. Ferjani now has 16 combined victories in his two team competitions this season. Colon played a big role for the men's foil team that won 21 out of 27 bouts in a dominant performance on Sunday. No men's foil specialist lost more than three bouts individually. Mark Dolgonos led the men's epee team with five wins in his debut for the Red Storm. The men were able to secure victories over Hunter College and NYU, but narrowly fell to Columbia by a score of 14-13.
In the women's competition, Freshman Julia Cieslar continued her strong start to her collegiate career, collecting eight wins in nine bouts to help guide the saber team to winning record on the day at 15-12. Graduate student Andrea Rizzi and junior Nicole Gavrilko each racked up seven victories to propel the epee team to a sterling 19-8 record on Sunday. The women's team avenged its loss to Columbia at the St. John's invitational and took care of LIU, 15-12.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 27 when it travels to Philadelphia to take on Temple, Penn State and others in the Temple Invitational.
