St. John’s Continues BIG EAST Play with Battle at Butler

Red Storm looks to carry momentum after Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Providence
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's women's soccer hits the road for a match against Butler at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl on Thursday. Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Will Haskett on the call from Indianapolis.
St. John's logged a pair of positive results in BIG EAST play last week, tallying four points over two matches with a 1-0-1 record. On Sunday, the Red Storm earned a crucial 1-0 victory at Providence. Molly Feighan fired in the game-winner on an assist from Isabelle Aviza and Emily Riggins. The Pleasant Valley, N.Y., native found herself on the right side of the goal in the 61st minute and sent a rocket over the goalie's head and into the short side of the net for the game-winning tally.
The Johnnies began the week with a 1-1 draw with Creighton at Belson Stadium on Thursday night. As time was winding down, Jailene DeJesus played a ball back to Ava Collins, who threaded a cross that found the head of Brooke Boyd by the near post. The graduate student sent a header home for the equalizer with just nine seconds remaining in the game to grab a point for the Red Storm in conference play.
Through 14 matches, 10 different players have recorded goals for the Johnnies this year. Collins, Boyd, Aviza, Jessica Garziano and Nicole Gordon lead the way with two scores apiece. Feighan, Melina Couzis, Michelle Money, Kayla Mesaros, and DeJesus have posted one goal each. Garziano also paces the Johnnies with four assists and eight points. The midfielder's four helpers are tied for first in the league.
Gina Muzi has started all 14 matches in goal for the Red Storm squad, logging 34 saves while allowing just 10 goals. Her five shutouts this season ranks tied for second in the conference.
Butler comes into the match at 6-6-1 this season with a 3-2 mark in league competition. The Bulldogs are riding a three-game winning streak, having topped Providence, Villanova and DePaul in their last outings.
BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Katie Soderstrom paces the league with six goals, four assists, 16 points and 48 shots this year. The Carmel, Ind., native's three game-winners also rank atop the league standing and 34th in the nation.
Anna Pierce has started all 13 matches between the pipes for the Bulldogs. The redshirt freshman has tallied 39 stops while allowing 15 goals this year.
