Brendan Smith fires an opening-round 68 to pace the field
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Coming off a victory at the UConn Invitational two weeks ago, the St. John's men's golf team continued its stretch of stellar play at the Lehigh Invitational on Friday, shooting three under as a team to take the first round lead.
After 18 holes at the par-72 Saucon Valley Country Club Grace Course, the Red Storm sits atop the 15-team field, three shots clear of Rider in second and seven shots ahead of Lehigh's "B" squad in third.
Brendan Smith, a fifth-year senior, paced the field with an opening-round 68. The Sayville, N.Y., native was bogey-free until his final hole of the day and played the par 3s in two under. No other player in the 78-man field shot better than 70 on the day.
Jack Simon fired a one-under 71 and currently sits in a tie for fifth with 18 holes remaining. Peicheng Chen also sits inside the top 10, shooting one under on the back to come in at an even-par 72.
Tyler Gerbavsists rounded out the Red Storm's Friday scorers, carding a two-over 74 to tie for 18th on the individual leaderboard.
After a shaky start, Ryan Rittberger shifted gears, going one under on the inward nine to finish with a 78. Competing as an individual, Gage Wolfle also logged a Friday 78.
Saturday's final round will begin at 10 a.m. off holes 1 and 10.
