St. John’s Readies for Metropolitan Championships

The Red Storm finished second as a team in the event last season
QUEENS, N.Y.- After a two-week hiatus, the St. John's cross country team will return to action and compete in the Metropolitan Championships, hosted by Fordham University, at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Friday morning. The 5k race is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. with an awards ceremony to follow at 12:15 p.m.
Senior Claire Cushing put together a solid performance last time out at the Battle in Beantown in Boston on Sept. 23. The Ontario, Canada native posted a personal best 5k time of 18:40.0 to pace the Johnnies' efforts at Franklin Park.
Freshman standout Ezgi Yasar continued her strong debut season in a St. John's uniform on Sept. 23, logging a mark of 18:40.1 to finish just behind Cushing and place in the top 60 overall against some of the best in the country.
Ana Markovina tallied a new personal best in Boston, crossing the finish line at 19:45.1 to secure a third-place result among the squad.
Last year, St. John's finished second at the Metropolitan Championships, its best ever result at the event that dates back to 1985. Three runners finished in the top 15 overall, including Cushing and Hannah Huleatt. The Johnnies have finished fifth or better in each of the last three Metropolitan Championships.
The Red Storm will run at Van Cortlandt for the second time this season after placing fifth at the Br. John "Paddy" Doyle Meet of Champions on Sept. 16.
