Ezgi Yasar and Claire Cushing both secured top-five overall results
BRONX, N.Y.- The St. John's cross country team had a solid day at Van Cortlandt Park on Friday morning, taking second in the Metropolitan Championships for the second consecutive season.
St. John's finished ahead of several top tri-state area schools, including BIG EAST rival Seton Hall along with local foes Manhattan and Columbia.
Friday's mark matches the 2021 team's second-place result as the best finish by the Red Storm in its history at the event that dates back to 1985.
Ezgi Yasar and Claire Cushing anchored the Johnnies' efforts on Friday, finishing third and fourth overall, respectively. Yasar posted a time of 19:38.3, her third straight mark of 19:40 or better, and Cushing crossed the line just four seconds behind Yasar at 19:42.6.
Hannah Huleatt logged her best finish of the season, grabbing 13th place with a time of 20:40.8. Huleatt's result gave the Johnnies three runners in the top 15 overall for the first time this season.
Nearly one year after making her collegiate debut at the Metropolitan Championships, Gabriella Caronia posted a solid mark of 21:41.5 which was good for 27th place overall. Caronia's time was her new best at Van Cortlandt Park.
